"Dot Com" Turns 25 Years Old
Wow. They grow up so fast, don't they? Of course few of us were around to see .com's baby steps. We were too focused on MTV when they still had music, wondering if this new Nintendo thing was going to catch on, and just generally in awe of what an awesome decade the 80s were. These clothes will never look dated in old photographs!
I'd hazard a guess that for most people, the internet (and the world wide web, though nobody calls it that anymore) is probably more like 10 or 12 to most people. My first taste was about 1995 or so, when America Online added an internet "portal" to their service. Prior to that, they'd been a self contained subscription service. Everything at AOL was by AOL. The internet changed all that, and pretty soon people started looking at AOL like they look at 80s fashions.
The .com suffix was joined by .net, .org, .edu, .info, and countless others. But even all of these years later, .com is still the holy grail. At my work, we had to settle for a .net because the .com was taken. Even though it is not even in use by the owner, they will not relinquish it.

Science is Cool: History of the Internet in 8 Minutes
This nerd-tastic video is quite educational. And it has simple (but nifty) graphics to help you understand. The British-accented narrator doesn't hurt either. But see how far you can follow this before you hit your "huh?" wall. I got to TCP/IP, and then my brain burnt out. . .
