Quote of the Day: Obama's Nobel Peace Prize

"Can't wait to see how long it takes before some ultra-right lunatic whines that Obama shouldn't be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize when he's bombing the moon."

Rachel Maddow on Obama's Nobel Prize, and the Reaction to it

As promised earlier, here is a clip from The Rachel Maddow Show, with commentary about the right-wing reaction to President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize win. Enjoy.

President Obama Wins Peace Prize; Right Wing Loses its Shit

Rachel Maddow made a comment on her show tonight (which I'll probably post when it is available) about the contrast between "Bush Derangement Syndrome," (BDS) and "Obama Derangement Syndrome." When Bush was criticized, it was largely for things like war, torture, wire-tapping, crony appointments, Katrina, 9/11. Things of consequence, things worthy of derision. With Obama, it is everything he does, or everything about him that sends right-wing world into a tizzy.

In this case, Obama--somewhat surprisingly--won the Nobel Peace Prize. He then responded to this news humbly, and seemed leery of even deeming himself worthy of it. Talk radio and FOX "News" (and of course, the right-wing blogosphere) has completely freaked out over this development. You'd think Obama stuffed the Nobel ballot box or something. Of course, this being the same group of people who had multiple orgasms when Chicago (and thus, America) lost the bid for the 2016 Olympics, I guess I really shouldn't be surprised.

I personally heard Sean Hannity and the cretinous Mark Levin on the radio this afternoon, pretty much going apeshit over the development. Of course with Levin, "apeshit" is pretty much his default position. Then, MSNBC played clips from FOX that pretty much confirmed what I thought they'd be up to. So let's get this straight. Any criticism of Bush was BDS, was akin to treason, and came from "America haters." Why is all of this squawking now OK?

Gore at the White House

Photo from source, New York Times

I'll admit, the sight of Al Gore in the White House was enough for my mind to wander into the alternate universe where he's been there all along. In fact, that would make a very good movie, but it would ultimately depress us, returning to reality.

But I think the most interesting part of this story is the White House Press Secretary's comment toward the end. If I'm reading this right, it's Bush who has the right to hold some sort of grudge against Gore. Maybe we're in some sort of alternate reality after all?

[Excerpt]

Gore and Bush Chat About Global Warming

. . .But the president did personally telephone Mr. Gore to extend the invitation, and the White House changed the date of the event so Mr. Gore could attend. Mr. Bush’s press secretary, Dana Perino, told reporters the president is willing to let bygones be bygones.

“This president does not harbor any resentments,” she said. “He never has.”
