Science is Scary: Supercollider, Black Holes, Doomsday

Image from LiveScience

Everybody sing, "It's the end of the world as we know it!"

I love science stuff, but I've never quite been able to wrap my head around the whole supercollider idea. I'm sure it's all very cool, but I've never really figured out what they're trying to prove. As it happens, I may never find out, because there is the outside chance that all life on earth will cease tomorrow. Or something. . .

Will the Large Hadron Collider Destroy Earth?

The potential for the world's largest atom smasher to destroy Earth is one question weighing on the minds of some lay people as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) prepares to go online Wednesday.

Don't worry, say the experts, who are more concerned with whether the 17 mile-long particle accelerator underground at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva, Switzerland, will work as planned and, perhaps, reveal the existence of the so-called God particle. . .

Science is Cool: Rogue Black Holes Roaming Galaxy

Image from source, Raw Story

Yeah, they say these black holes don't pose any danger to Earth, but since when do they ever tell us the truth? I say forget your New Year's resolutions, put on a pair of sweats and a comfy old T-shirt, order a pizza and get the tub of ice cream out of the freezer. 'Cause I don't think if these black holes roam to our solar system that they'll be bringing any of those cute Disney robots. . . Heh.

Milky Way could hold hundred of rogue black holes: study

Hundreds of rogue black holes may be roaming around the Milky Way waiting to engulf stars and planets that cross their path, US astronomers said Wednesday.

The astronomers believe these "intermediate mass" black holes are invisible except in rare circumstances and have been spawned by mergers of black holes within globular clusters -- swarms of stars held together by their mutual gravity. . .
