Andrew Sullivan is something of an enigma, an outspoken, openly gay conservative. He used to be really hard-line, at least seemingly to me. But some time during the George W. Bush administration, Sullivan began to seriously challenge conservative ideology. And recently, he has been a real source of humor for me. Largely due to his shared aversion to all things Sarah Palin, and his joy (and Joy's as well, it would seem) in pointing out her flaws. I share his questions about the--allegedly tabloidy--subject of "babygate," the highly improbable story of Trig Palin's birth. Where is the birth certificate, Sarah?

One More Bit on Sarah Palin - Andrew Sullivan

Back when we were first introduced to Sarah Palin (lo those many. . .months ago), there wasn't much known about her. She never gave a press conference, and was late in giving interviews (and what fun those eventually were!). So, outside a few tidbits, the media and bloggers didn't have much to go on. Very shortly though, came a flood of rumors and innuendo, originating from Alaska.

It was during this short time period where the myth was born that Palin's family was savaged. The media barely touched the rumors, but bloggers did, at least until more current information came to light. It really was just a few days that the "babygate" rumor--the unlikely story of baby Trig's birth, and possible maternity issues--was lobbed about the blogosphere. Even on this blog, I didn't write much about it. But the issue really is kind of newsworthy. And for all this talk about friggin' birth certificates, what about Trig's? None of my business? Okay then, what of all of this talk about Palin's honesty?

Conservative Andrew Sullivan Wary of Sarah Palin

Friday night's episode of Real Time with Bill Maher was one of the better episodes so far this season. Usually, Maher has a monologue, three guests, and two others, sometimes in studio, sometimes by satellite. Friday, he only had the monologue and three guests. And that was all that was needed. The conversation was spirited, and disillusioned conservative Andrew Sullivan had some of the most interesting things to say. If you don't have HBO, Real Time might be a good reason to get it. Check it out.

In an interview Sunday on CNN, onetime gay conservative pundit Andrew Sullivan asserted that Bush officials who worked on a memo authorizing legal use of torture "should not leave the country" because they "will be, at some point, indicted for war crimes."

Andrew Sullivan on Torture (and FOX "News")

Andrew Sullivan is an odd duck. He used to be famous for being a gay conservative pundit/blogger. I must admit to not following him very closely, as I just could not understand his point of view. But in the few pieces of his that I have read over the last few years, coupled with his appearances on shows like Real Time with Bill Maher, I've noticed a profound change in his attitudes.

He may very well still be conservative. But the blinders are off his eyes regarding the Bush Administration. And that is amazing. Most prominent conservative pundits have stuck by their guns, and their Decider. I'm amazed at the contortions many of the FOX "News" crew will put themselves through in order to defend the indefensible. Here, Andrew Sullivan takes them to task for defending torture, and the cover-up of torture. Kudos, Andrew!

It's refreshing, actually. I just listened to Charles say that the torture of terror suspects in 2002 was justified because the United States was flying blind and had no knowledge of what al Qaeda was planning. He won't say "torture", of course, although the law is clear that it is torture. (He and Fox News keep referring to the notion of "harsh interrogation techniques". I think they realized that the "enhanced interrogation techniques" was a little too close to the Gestapo's euphemism for comfort.) And he then said that destroying the tapes was justified because you don't want them coming up on YouTube, do you?
