Indy 500 Champ Killed in Huge Wreck

Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway after his car became ensnarled in a fiery 15-car pileup on Lap 13, flew over another vehicle and landed in a catch fence just outside Turn 2.

Wheldon, 33, was a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, including this year’s race. . .

  1. I was at the race and it was truly sad. The biggest challenge is going to explain to the kids at the race about the death.
    It is also sad because Wheldon had an infant and toddler along with a young wife who are now without a father and husband. Very sad.

  2. It is truly one of those things that clicks a few different responses in my brain. One, is of course that I'm sad another human died. But another is the inherent danger involved in such sports. And the implicit desire of many to see a crash happen. Still, many other occupations involve danger, and nobody sets out on their day hoping to die. So I become rather flummoxed in my response, and try to keep it to myself. Which is why I didn't add much of a comment, originally.
