Samantha Bee Puts "Creation" of Trump Squarely on. . .Democrats?

For a while now, conversation in my house has been over the fact that Donald Trump's ascendency is a result of an out-of-control Republican Party building their own Frankenstein's Monster. The main difference ironically being that the angry villagers are actually on his side.

Former Daily Show correspondent Samantha Bee (via her new TBS program, Full Frontal) correctly finds Frankenstein's ancestor: and he is us. In other words, Democrats, who stayed home and ignored the 2010 election. I warned about this myself in several blog posts (to my admittedly tiny corner of the internets), but couldn't ever have foreseen what it would lead to. Samantha's right of course, but only partially. Lazy Democrats enabled the already angry, frothy GOP base to rise to the top and take over the mainstream. They furthered this effort by repeating their sloth-like behavior in 2014.

There's something less sexy about mid-term elections to swaths of Democrats. And let's face it. The only time you hear laments about our two-party system, is when we're down to the wire. Nobody seems willing to build up third or fifth national parties in the off-years. The only ones chugging away in those years, running the long game? Republicans. And as feckless and gormless as they can be, they're really good at the long game.

Samantha Bee Skewers Lazy Democrats Who "Built" Donald Trump

On Monday night, late night host Samantha Bee said Democrats should shoulder some of the blame for Donald Trump, the billionaire reality show star who is likely to become the Republican Party's presidential nominee. . .

John Oliver: The Uselessness of the Penny

Last Week with John Oliver has quickly become a favorite in our household. The freedom that HBO affords over network or cable is a nice element. But I can't help but wonder how Oliver would have done as a replacement for Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, rather than Trevor Noah (who has been hit-or-miss since his debut). Here is Oliver's featured bit from Sunday night's show. I will share his take on the Syrian refugee crisis if it becomes available, as it was truly well stated.

Jon Stewart to Leave The Daily Show

This is a day many fans have long feared. After the exodus (or planned exodus) of luminaries like Stephen Colbert and David Letterman (and to a lesser extent, Craig Ferguson) from their groundbreaking late night shows, Jon Stewart is leaving The Daily Show. This one probably hurts the most, as Stewart is a nexus of sorts for pop culture, humor, news and politics. He brought it all together, particularly for liberals and progressives.

I dare say, neither The Daily Show/Comedy Central (whatever becomes of the franchise), nor Stewart himself, will eclipse what they've achieved with the program. A new star may be born, of course (and John Oliver may be sorry he jumped ship). But the gravitas Stewart earned in that chair, and the zeitgeist that formed around it will be difficult for any involved to ever recreate. What it does, is open the door for the new The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to take off, unencumbered by competition from his previous boss. I'm hopeful that Samantha Bee and Jason Jones, along with the fleet of amazing writers at The Daily Show either manage to rebuild and/or maintain some of the brilliance Stewart managed to deliver. But I fear without him as a linchpin, this moment in American pop culture just may be coming to a close.

Jon Stewart Leaving 'The Daily Show'

Jon Stewart will step down as host of "The Daily Show," he announced during Tuesday night's taping. Comedy Central confirmed the news in a tweet.

John Oliver's Advice on the Return of Sarah Palin

Remember when we thought Sarah Palin's 15 minutes were over? Well, she's swept back onto the political celebrity stage, still as pointless as ever, but demanding to be heard. And while I usually shy away from using the same source for two posts in a row, I'm double-dipping into The Daily Show with Jon Stewart John Oliver for this excellent response to the return of the Palin.

John Oliver: Just f*cking ignore Sarah Palin’s turd supermarket of self-contradictory nonsense

. . .“I just don’t even know where to begin with her,” he said. “I mean — hold on. I think I’ve just realized something. Fuck it, this is exactly what she wants. Just because I walked into a turd supermarket doesn’t mean I have to buy anything. . .”

Left Behind: Samantha Bee Examines the Plight of Persecuted Christians

I'm consistently amazed that The Daily Show with Jon Stewart John Oliver is able to line up guests for their roving reports. That they have yet to discover that they are the joke, I don't know. Such is the case with reporter Samantha Bee's mock sympathy over anti-gay Christians who feel persecuted because it is unfashionable to openly malign gay people. It's both hilarious and a bit disturbing. These are nutty people.

Jon Stewart Responds to Latest Republican Debate

One of the unfortunate things about The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is that it isn't really daily. With its four-days per week schedule, everything from Thursday afternoon to Monday morning has to be covered in the Monday show. So, Stewart was a bit late getting around to last Thursday's FOX "News"/Google Republican debate. You know, the one where the gay soldier was booed? Yeah, that one.

Daily Show: Norway Terrorist & FOX "News"

Jon Stewart, as always, is one of the most vocal and best critics of FOX "News." Because not only is he correct, he's extremely funny while proving it. This post requires two clips, since it zooms from the Norwegian terrorist, the media's coverage of it, FOX's objection to the media's coverage, and then the sky-high hypocrisy of FOX (particularly the doltish Sean Hannity) as it pertains to how they characterize "the other side." Brilliant and hilarious, as usual.

Daily Show: FOX "News" and Their Lies

I've had fun with Jon Stewart's FOX "News" Sunday appearance in a couple of previous posts. This is likely the coda to the story, but it's the best part. See, on Sunday, Stewart told Chris Wallace that FOX "News" viewers were consistently the least informed people according to polls. Politifact reviewed his statement, and dubbed it "not true." FOX viewers are consistently low on the list of knowledgeable viewers, but they're not always last. This is a dubious distinction--and a quibble at best--but right-wing world has apparently been making hay out of it.

But guess what, they lose. They lose hard. This clip from Tuesday night's show is among the funniest in a while, and illustrates perfectly that FOX "News" is not news.

Daily Show: Tone Def Poetry Jam, the "Common" Controversy

[EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm reassembling the missing blog posts that got "eaten" when Blogger went offline. Please forgive if the old posts come back, and these become duplicates!]

As promised, here is The Daily Show with Jon Stewart clip from Wednesday night. It's a wicked indictment of FOX "News" in general and Sean Hannity in specific over the latest right-wing non-troversy about the poet/hip-hop/rap artist, Common.

Jon Stewart Shines Light on 9/11 First Responders

The Republicans in the Senate--much like they did earlier this year in the House--have rather shamelessly been blocking passage of a health bill for 9/11 first responders. If Democrats were doing such a thing, the cry from Right-Wing World would be deafening. But because Democrats are for it, Republicans are again' it. Just for fun, Harry Reid ought to put a vote on the schedule to affirm Mom and apple pie as "American," just to see the Republicans vote against it.

Oddly, the 9/11 first responders story has gotten rather short shrift from the media. Again, I'm sure this is because it is Republicans who are blocking it. The angle is maybe too weird for them to wrap their inside the beltway minds around. So, once again, it's up to Comedy Central's Jon Stewart to bring a spotlight to the issue. For all of his protestations to the contrary, Stewart is an important political voice.

Jon Stewart's Brilliant Glenn Beck Parody

Last week, Glenn Beck came up with a whopper of a story, using marionettes of all things, to prove that (cue scary music) George Soros is trying to take down America.  As with any good conspiracy theory, there were nuggets of truth, some wild conjecture, and lots of hyperbole.  But the funny part was, much of Beck's storyline--a rich, powerful old white dude with a media empire, and a stated political viewpoint--could easily fit Rupert Murdoch, Beck's own boss.

On Thursday's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Stewart gave us his latest comedic Glenn Beck impression, and nailed it.  It was brilliant, and it was funny. And it kind of went against Stewarts recent arguments that he's more comedian than political pundit
