The Gay Thing: Marriage Equality in Arkansas?

If you weren't paying attention to the news this weekend (like most people), you might not know that gay couples have been marrying in Arkansas. I know! Same-sex marriage in the South! Now, as these things usually go, there will likely be an "emergency" stay issued putting a stop to the weddings, leaving some gays married, and others barred from marrying. How stopping weddings rises to the level of an emergency, I really have no idea. But the fact that the South has been breeched is a fantastic sign for the marriage equality movement.

ARKANSAS: What Will Happen Tomorrow?

The Associated Press reports that 15 same-sex couples were issued marriage licenses yesterday in Eureka Springs, Arkansas before the office closed at 1PM with many couples still in line. County clerks across the state took part in a conference call yesterday afternoon to discuss what they will do tomorrow. . .

Lawrence O'Donnell Rewrites Mitt Romney's Mormon Question and Answer

It remains an open question, whether or not the South and other Bible-belt areas turn out for Mitt Romney. Will evangelical voters turn out for a Mormon? Will their distaste for Mitt outweigh their distaste for the (black) other guy? Well, amazingly enough, the LDS portion of Mittens' narrative has been kept on the margins for most of this contest. Probably partially because of the confusion of having to otherwise choose two Catholics Newt Gingrich, and  Rick (don't Google me) Santorum who for some reason is acting like Pat Robertson Jr. Aren't Protestants supposed to distrust Cathol. . .oh forget it.
But don't count on the Mormon Thing to continue to stay in the background. People who loathe the President, but think Mormonism is a cult may start to get itchy. They may start to act out. Like the guy who brought it up just recently. Check it out.

Jon Stewart: Mitt Romney's Painful Southern Strategy

We've seen for years now that Mitt Romney's attempts to get down here with the peasants can be forced and painful. But never so much as when he tries to be Southern. I'm a Yankee, and I'm offended. Jon Stewart, of course, has turned it into comedy gold (and a Jeff Foxworthy impression!).

Michael Steele Admits GOP is Racist

Image from source, Wonkette
Well, that's kind of the gist, anyway.  And I mean c'mon, that's about as shocking as when we learned Ricky Martin is gay.  The honest truth is, I posted this because of the graphic, which cracks me up.

Michael Steele Admits GOP Has Been Strategically Racist For 40+ Years, Hooray!

Perhaps you have heard about this one! Michael Steele gave another one of his speeches. In this speech, he confirmed what all you race-baiting liberal ‘tards have been wetting your pants about since forever: minorities such as Africkans have not had much of a reason to vote for the Republican party since Pat Buchanan wrote up Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” 40-some years ago. . .

Strange Maps: 1860s Cotton vs. 2008 Election

This was too interesting not to share. The site linked below shows that the voters for Barack Obama in the south this year is almost identical to the highest cotton production in the south in the 1860s. The theory goes that those cotton producing areas were heaviest with slaves in the 19th century, and that the density of the African American community stayed heavy there.

From Pickin’ Cotton to Pickin’ Presidents
. . .The link between these two maps is not causal, but correlational, and the correlation is African-Americans. Once they were the slaves on whom the cotton economy had to rely for harvesting. Despite an outward migration towards the Northern cities, their settlement pattern now still closely corresponds to that of those days. . .
