BREAKING NEWS: Justice David Souter to Retire

If you think 100 days of President Barack Obama, the party-switching of Arlen Specter, the imminent seating of Al Franken as Senator, and the disintegration of the GOP have conservatives going bananas, you may have seen nothing yet. Now, we have the news that Supreme Court Justice Souter is retiring from the bench. Which means, that Obama will get to appoint a new justice, with a Senate that is decidedly in his corner.

Now, do you think that Republicans are more likely to filibuster, or to demand an "up or down vote?" Considering how strenuously they barked the latter during the Bush Era, you could be forgiven for guessing wrong.

Sen. Arlen Specter Switches to Democratic Party

This is interesting, to say the least. The Democrats have been anxious to seat Al Franken (D-Minn.), to make him the 59th Democratic Senator, in order to have nearly a filibuster-proof majority. This is necessary, because the Republicans are forcing a super-majority a lot of the time. Unexpectedly, Arlen Specter (R D-PA) has switched parties, locking it up, once Franken is seated.

Of course, Specter has long been a contrarian, and his new role will not ensure a 100% party-line vote. But it's still newsworthy. To say the least.

Arlen Specter's Cancer Returns

I really feel bad for the Arlen Specter. He just appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart recently, promoting his book about triumph over adversity. He's had to climb quite a few mountains, and now he has yet another. Here's hoping he's able to do it again. He's one of the good guys.
