Stephen Colbert Resurrects Character, "The Word," Jon Stewart and Coins "Trumpiness"

Perfect. I've been saying for months (seems like years) that the whole Donald J. Trump phenomenon seemed to hinge upon "truthiness," and "gut-feel," a form of fact-free-but-feels-right politics, practiced by arch Republicans. But it never felt like enough to explain it. After all, truthiness has been a Republican thing going back to the beginning of the Dubya era, at least. The Trump thing, this unbelievably unqualified, unexplainable famous-for-being-famous, reality star turned politician as an actual candidate for president? It's so strange, so out of explainable historical context, it just seems like bad writing. Who would have believed it, if it was foretold twenty years ago? Ten?

But, having been prescient before, Stephen Colbert has resurrected his arch conservative character (also called Stephen Colbert), brought along retired Jon Stewart, and his character-defining comedy segment, The Word, the bit that brought truthiness into being, in his very first show. And the new Word is:

TRUMPINESS.

Jon Stewart Doesn't "Get" Cliven Bundy Protest Either

Turns out, my confusion over exactly what supporters of Cliven Bundy are standing up for isn't really confusion. They don't really know either. Their thinking that the government response to twenty years of delinquent payments was "excessive," is pretty much all they've got. Beyond that, you've got Bundy--who claims to not recognize the existence or authority of the United States government--a fringy nut, who owes the government a whole lot of money, but doesn't want to pay. How that drew out a demented tea bagger posse, I have no idea. But I suspect they've been itching for "go time" (armed insurrection) for some time, and they took this as a trial run.

Jon Stewart, of course, has a funnier take than I do. That's why he gets paid the big bucks.

I'm consistently amazed that The Daily Show with Jon Stewart John Oliver is able to line up guests for their roving reports. That they have yet to discover that they are the joke, I don't know. Such is the case with reporter Samantha Bee's mock sympathy over anti-gay Christians who feel persecuted because it is unfashionable to openly malign gay people. It's both hilarious and a bit disturbing. These are nutty people.

Jon Stewart Takes on Gun Control

It's a question I've been asking for a few weeks now. Why is it that we as a country can overreact to any perceived threat, every imagined  calamity (albeit usually after the fact), except for anything to do with domestic guns? If it's a terrorist with guns, that's a whole different thing. In fact, I wonder when we'll have our first armed Islamic militia, and what the FOX "News" reaction to that will be. But I digress. Jon Stewart was off the air during the Sandy Hook massacre, so was slow to comment on it. But boy howdy did he do an awesome job. Took the words right out of my mouth, made them a whole lot better, and then managed to make them funny. Kudos, Mr. Stewart.

The (Not) Colbert SuperPAC's New Anti-SuperPAC ad

When I heard Newt Gingrich lamenting Mitt Romney's dollar-rich SuperPAC, I just about did a spit take. I totally expected that Bill Maher, SNL, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert would have some great material. But with Colbert's faux campaign, and Stewart's. . .uh. . .stewardship of The Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert SuperPAC, there is potentially a much larger audience for it. That can only be a good thing.

Stephen Colbert's SuperPAC's First Anti-Romney Attack Ad

Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow (the public name of the Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super PAC) has released its first attack ad against Mitt Romney, since Stephen Colbert launched his presidential bid.  As expect, it is both funny, and completely on point. If corporations are people--as Mittens himself said--what is the logical conclusion, if Romney effectively killed several of them? I only wish Colbert was serious. This is a very meta campaign, by a candidate that has been skewering SuperPACs, and the ridiculousness of the Citizens United ruling. It just adds one more layer of truthiness.
