McCain Ad on Emmys STILL Touting Bridge to Nowhere

Are you kidding me? For weeks, fact checkers have been blasting the John McCain/Sarah Palin campaign's "bridge to nowhere" lie. And just moments ago (for me, I'm writing on Sunday night), a McCain-Palin ad is still touting the line.

I know I've made the comment before, but it bears repeating. Republicans don't respect their voters. How could they, when they sell them lies, and hope that they believe them?

FYI, if you're one of those "uninformed voters," the bridge to nowhere was a very expensive bridge to an island in Alaska with something like 50 residents. Sarah Palin lobbied for the bridge, and even campaigned on it. It was only after it became a national joke that Palin dropped her support for it, after Congress said "no." But she still got--and kept--the money!

Um, OK. I said to the other half as the speech was over (and before MSNBC's Keith Olbermann said it), "That was like Tracy Flick in Election, all grown up." I dunno, maybe it's her accent.

Anyway, I'm sure that was fun for the Republican Party faithful. It was very long, punctuated with some decent jabs that were well delivered, if not entirely always true. It was obvious to me that many of the things she was saying were not from her own personal repertoire, unless she's done some serious cramming since Sunday. All in all, she did not say one word that won us over, so I'm pretty sure anyone who was already on Barack Obama's side is still there.

There were a couple of noteworthy uh-oh moments (not counting having "baby daddy," Levi on stage). First was the prominent display of her son and his deployment date, and which branch of the military he was in. That sounds like an extremely stupid thing to do to me, reminding me of Prince Harry's delayed entry into the military over fears for his safety.

Also, there was the repeated reference to Palin being against the "Bridge to Nowhere" in Alaska. This is an attempt to distance herself from Ted Stevens, the corrupt Republican from Alaska that she was very involved with. Check out this story for the real details.

It's a lovely story, but the idea that a sitting governor would turn down free money is an absolute joke. Such a thing never happens, and in this case, it did not happen. . .

Sen. Ted Stevens Indicted on Multiple Counts

Senator Ted Stevens (R-Obviously) of Alaska has been indicted on multiple felony counts today. I'll confess, while I knew that Stevens was clueless about the internet (a series of tubes!), and had bad ideas (bridge to nowhere), I had no idea he was this dirty. Or that he was eighty-four years old! Yikes. He'll be the elder statesman of the pokey, that's for sure.
