L-E-S-B-I-A-N (A Rocky Mountain Mike Song Parody)

If you missed it, Jonathan Saenz, the President of "Texas Values," ironically lost his wife to a lesbian lover. Which is hilarious, I don't care who you are. And to prove it, here's the Rocky Mountain Mike song parody, to the tune of D-I-V-O-R-C-E by Tammy Wynette. Enjoy!

Frivolity Break: Teenage Ladies Fight Back Against "Bro Country"

I've written before about the trend called "Bro Country." It's what passes for Country Music these days, or I guess what would be Country's version of Top 40. I'm slightly allergic to country music outside my long-ago forays into Country & Western gay bars (don't ask). But it doesn't take much immersion to see the pattern. As I said in the past, my introduction came from being trapped in a dentist's chair for about an hour. That's all it took, an hour--maybe 8 or 9 songs--and I was just appalled. Not so much for the messages in the songs (though that's kind of icky too), but its uniformity. Every song is about essentially the same thing, and each song is sung in pretty much the same style. As a latecomer to the genre, I'm probably less aware of it than most people.

Now, a couple of teenaged ladies have decided to sing a rebuttal of sorts to this entire sub-genre. I doubt it will change anything, but I hope they get rich and famous with it!

Teenage Duo Takes On ‘Bro Country’ Cliches, Writes Country Song Where Women Do More Than Bring Boys Beer

Listen to this first single from Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye, a teenage singing-songwriting country duo, out on iTunes today. Now get ready to listen to it again and again and again. “Girl in a Country Song,” with its tongue-in-cheek takedown of the way bro country treats women—“We used to get a little respect / now we’re lucky if we even get / to climb up in your truck keep our mouths shut and ride along / and be the girl in the country song.”—has all the makings of a hit: clever, on-the-zeitgeist lyrics, a sense of humor, and two very talented, telegenic teenagers. . .

What is This Horrror Called "Bro Country?"

Image from source, LA Times [click to embiggen]
It's not like I can't appreciate the imagery of a hot, dumb redneck with some brews on a moonlit night, goodness knows. It sounds like half a dozen classic gay porn videos of yesteryear. Well, except for the ubiquitous girl with the painted on jeans. She's gotta go.

But seriously, even though I don't listen to country music, like at all, on those occasions that a bit has filtered through, it's been all pretty much the same. And all pretty much stupid as hell. What is going on in the genre, anyway? I'm sure country music has always had trucks, beer, girls, moonlight and whatnot. But that's not all it had. These days? Like I said, my samples are small, but it's all I've heard, when I've had occasion to hear it.

Last time I was at the dentist, I spent an unusual amount of time just waiting in the chair, and then the usual amount for the cleaning. The entire time--maybe an hour and a half or so--a popular country station was on. And every song. EVERY. SONG. Every song was about that list above, with various levels of fakey-sounding country drawl, and differing amounts of studio polish. I recognized Blake Shelton's voice, from, well, The Voice on one of them. And here I thought he was one of the "good" ones.

Well, typing this on Thursday night, The Late Show with David Letterman had on some hick in a baseball cap (are those replacing cowboy hats, finally?) named Cole Swindell, which sounds like a porn name, singing "Chillin' It."  It was in the exact same style, but I'd put it on the low end of the quality scale, though this is a very short scale. And I was kind of amazed that these kind of hits apparently just keep on coming. It's dreadful. And it's apparently called "Bro Country."

Are bro-mantic songs taking over country music?

Female country singers are complaining that their music is being pushed off the airwaves by a new crew of young, male, “bro-country” musicians singing interchangeable songs about dirt roads, pickup trucks, girls in tiny cutoff jeans and beer, lots of beer. . .

Hank Williams Jr. Compares Obama to Hitler

Every time a liberal entertainer says something politically controversial, the right wing predictably stands up and says in unison, "shut up and sing!" or, "shut up and act!" or whatever fits. But when a conservative entertainer gets political, they're all for it. Ronald Reagan (now sainted), Arnold Schwarzenegger (when he wond the Governorship of California), John Voit, Kelsey Grammar, even the tremendously batty Victoria Jackson are now right wing heroes. Now, Hank Williams Jr. may be bumped off the list. But I doubt it. When Ted Nugent made nasty, offensive references to Hillary Clinton, he stayed in the right's good graces.

Toby Keith is a Democrat?

Image from TobyKeith.com

Mglphrp godricklap phliddleput schlumpifarq pradump glurg. . .

Sorry, I think my head imploded for just a second there. The inexplicably popular, country music singin', Ford Truck hawkin', boot-in-your-ass, trans-westite "cowboy" is a Democrat??? Wow. If that does a number on a liberal brain like mine, imagine what his Republican fans must be going through!

And there will be no excerpt, because I don't want the AP copyright Nazis after me. . .
