McCain Camp Lies About Green Screen/Walter Reed

Photo from Brad Blog

I've written a lot in the past that it is a shame that we not only expect politicians to openly lie to us, we usually shrug it off, almost without a thought. Well, unless he wags his finger at us and tells us he "didn't have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky." Then, people will rant and rave about it for years.

Politicians lie about big stuff (Mrs. Palin's "bridge to nowhere" lie), they lie about small stuff ("I'm staying in this to the end!" by every primary contender except Hillary Clinton), and absolutely inconsequential stuff like that in this story. Most media outlets hedge around calling politicians on lies. They use phrases and words like, "misstatement," "doesn't line up with the facts," even "untruth," but rarely say the candidate lied.

In this case the magnitude of the lie, and the thing being lied about aren't of much notice. It's the story of a campaign screw-up, and at John McCain's big speech, no less. Hardly earth shattering. But that's kind of the point, isn't it? There was no need to lie here, and they didn't at first. Then they came up with a story with an air of "truthiness" about it, and changed their true answer to a lie. Why? And why do most of us not care?

The reason I care, is that this has been the pattern of the current holder of the White House for the entire term. Start with one story, then change it to something that sounds better, more "truthy," and then change it again. Heedless of video or audio proof that their story has changed, they change it anyway. If that is what McCain aims to continue, I want no part of it.

Those of Us Who Are About to Tire Swing. . .

It always brings a tear to my eye when I see the Grey Lady hopping on the McCain tire swing. But there she goes. Yesterday the McCain campaign was all mum on the Walter Reed/Green Screen goof until deep in the evening when they released some pro forma bamboozlement to the effect that it was all on purpose. They mean to highlight the middle school. . .

John McCain's Green Screen Explained: Idiots in Charge

Image from source, Brad Blog

There are many head scratching, mind-boggling things to ponder about the recently completed Republican National Convention. How it is possible for so many uninspiring, wrinkled old white guys (Lindsey Graham, Fred Thompson, Joe Lieberman, etc.) to get a room full of crazy-hat-wearin' conservatives worked into a frenzy, is just one example. For the entire GOP to be in full swoon over Sarah Palin, a woman they've known about for under a week, would be another.

But the very first thing I thought about when John McCain gave his acceptance speech (well, after I made a mental note of the way he doddered out onto the stage) was "oh my God, he's got the green screen again!" You see, some time ago, Barack Obama gave a rousing speech on the same night that John McCain gave a leaden performance in front of a green backdrop. This inspired The Colbert Report to create the "Green Screen Challenge," a video editing competition to make John McCain interesting. Brilliant, and very funny.

But why would McCain's campaign do it again? On long shots of the stage, you could see the truth: It was the lawn of a big ornate building that gave the impression of a green backdrop on tighter shots. The fact that most of the rest of his speech was shot against a blue sky with a flapping flag--only to have solid blue behind McCain makes it funnier. But wait, it gets better than that.

In an attempt to show their "we love the troops" cred, McCain's campaign put that building with the lush green lawn up on their IMAX-sized screen behind McCain, because the building is Walter Reed. The medical hospital for wounded soldiers and veterans? They must have thought so, but sadly no. It's Walter Reed Middle School in California. Great GOOGLEy-moogley! And a hearty Nelson Muntz HA-HA!

John McCain's Attempt to Use 'Injured Troops as Political Props' as Successful as Bush/McCain 'War on Terror'

For those who watched the speech, they likely realize that the green in close-up was the lawn from a larger backdrop of what appeared to be a mansion.

Our thought: One of McCain's?! Odd choice, that.

Turns out, no, it wasn't one of his houses, it was an even dumber selection from the geniuses what run the GOP, who want you to entrust them to run the country. . .

John McCain in Feud with. . .Madonna?

So far this campaign season, there have been invocations of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. So, why not Madonna? Maybe it has something to do with this video?
