John McCain's Green Screen Explained: Idiots in Charge

There are many head scratching, mind-boggling things to ponder about the recently completed Republican National Convention. How it is possible for so many uninspiring, wrinkled old white guys (Lindsey Graham, Fred Thompson, Joe Lieberman, etc.) to get a room full of crazy-hat-wearin' conservatives worked into a frenzy, is just one example. For the entire GOP to be in full swoon over Sarah Palin, a woman they've known about for under a week, would be another.

But the very first thing I thought about when John McCain gave his acceptance speech (well, after I made a mental note of the way he doddered out onto the stage) was "oh my God, he's got the green screen again!" You see, some time ago, Barack Obama gave a rousing speech on the same night that John McCain gave a leaden performance in front of a green backdrop. This inspired The Colbert Report to create the "Green Screen Challenge," a video editing competition to make John McCain interesting. Brilliant, and very funny.

But why would McCain's campaign do it again? On long shots of the stage, you could see the truth: It was the lawn of a big ornate building that gave the impression of a green backdrop on tighter shots. The fact that most of the rest of his speech was shot against a blue sky with a flapping flag--only to have solid blue behind McCain makes it funnier. But wait, it gets better than that.

In an attempt to show their "we love the troops" cred, McCain's campaign put that building with the lush green lawn up on their IMAX-sized screen behind McCain, because the building is Walter Reed. The medical hospital for wounded soldiers and veterans? They must have thought so, but sadly no. It's Walter Reed Middle School in California. Great GOOGLEy-moogley! And a hearty Nelson Muntz HA-HA!

John McCain's Attempt to Use 'Injured Troops as Political Props' as Successful as Bush/McCain 'War on Terror'

For those who watched the speech, they likely realize that the green in close-up was the lawn from a larger backdrop of what appeared to be a mansion.

Our thought: One of McCain's?! Odd choice, that.

Turns out, no, it wasn't one of his houses, it was an even dumber selection from the geniuses what run the GOP, who want you to entrust them to run the country. . .
