RNC's Dave Agema and His Problem with Flight Attendants

Last week when we had the two big Supreme Court arguments on marriage equality, there was a veritable flood of gay stories, here on the blog and out in the world. And there still are, because all of those stories shook loose a whole bunch of other ones.

This one is about one of the GOP's lesser lights, and he'd hardly be worth a mention but for his stunning lack of awareness about how he comes off. And his world champion abilities to keep digging his hole deeper. But the kicker (for me) is the source of his anti-gay animus: gay male flight attendants. First, let me tell you that I'm married to one. Second, let me tell you that if you can pick your own flight crew, pick the gay guys. They're really the best at what they do, no matter what this yahoo says. But how could I resist this story, particularly when written with the heavy snark of Wonkette? I couldn't, that's what.

PS. Johnny from Airplane! wasn't a flight attendant, and I didn't even know the actor was gay when I was a kid. But others got it, it's hysterical, and Wonkette included it, so here it is!

Heh. Heh, heh, heh. . .HA! I'm sorry, but every time I read about one of these wing-nutty tea parties, I envision a dainty little girl's back yard tea party. That leads me to think of a grown-up, English tea party. And that leads me to think of Little Britain's Emily Howard, a laaaady!

It doesn't help that these little affairs had their genesis in a faux-grass roots, corporatocracy. And that they've been hotbeds of crazy. Unfocused, frothing, batshit, raving looney-toons, railing about a dozen different topics, all boiling down to them really being pissed off that a (black) Democrat took the White House. So, could they really get any more crazed to see themselves represented as a British transvestite? Oh, probably, but I just couldn't help it.

Little Britain Gets Movie Treatment!

Little Britain, the British sketch comedy show, is uneven. It's wildly scatter shot. You will be confused, repulsed and repelled by something in nearly episode. Oh, and it is hilarious. You have to be a fan of British humor. You have to be able to turn off your "I'm so offended" instinct. And, like so many English shows, you have to let it grow on you.

Black Adder was like that for me. Absolutely Fabulous too. But I eventually grew to love them. Like those two programs, Little Britain has grown beyond its initial short seasons on the BBC. It's had specials, and an American version (with the original stars). But now, it is going to be a movie. Can't wait.

Little Britain, USA Debuts September 28th

Do you like British comedies? Not everybody does. I certainly didn't when it came to Absolutely Fabulous the first time I saw it. Same thing with Blackadder, Are You Being Served? and Keeping Up Appearances. But a funny thing happens for me with British humor. . .if I stick with it, and keep watching, I like them more. In fact, once I "get" where they're going, I love it. All of the shows in this list have become favorites of mine to a different degree (AbFab on top, KUA toward the bottom--yes, Mr. Humphries, I mean you).

One of the bigger hits from across the pond in recent years was Little Britain. It's a delightfully quirky, scattershot sketch comedy show. Like our own Saturday Night Live, it has fits of brilliance intermixed with spots that leave you scratching your head. Unlike SNL, the bits don't go on forever, and if they don't hit your funnybone, they're gone in half a minute. And unlike anything on American television, Little Britain is dreadfully, shockingly inappropriate to everybody in every way--in short, my kind of show.

HBO has wisely brought the show to America as Little Britain, USA, and it debuts on Sunday, September 28. Take a look at the preview below for a hint at what it's like. And do yourself a favor; if you don't get it at first, or don't like it. . .watch it some more. I'll guarantee you, after two or three shows, you'll be quoting the shows you thought you didn't like!

Little Britain Coming to America!

Like most sketch comedy shows--and particularly British comedy shows--Little Britain is rather uneven and unpredictable. But when the show shines, it shines. There are some groaners in there, but the funny stuff will have you in stitches.

Now, Little Britain is being imported, with its original stars, for an American audience. Will I be watching? Computer says, "yes!"
