How Harry Reid Beat Sharron Angle

Image from source, The Daily Beast
The post-mortems of the 2010 election are plentiful, and I don't intend to dwell on them much from here on out. And if I never have to do another post about Sharron Angle, that will be just fine with me.  I mean, unless she does something daffy, outlandish or otherwise manages to extend her 15 minutes of fame. And I can't imagine that, can you (sarcasm).  Anyway, the excerpted article below is by Steve Friess, a favorite writer of mine from Las Vegas. It offers some insight at the local level that you might appreciate.

How Harry Pulled It Off

As Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took his victory lap on Wednesday before a state and a nation that had anticipated his humiliating demise, the reasons for his triumph became so obvious that it’s a wonder the outcome was ever in doubt.

Yes, he ran a magnificent, vicious, and effective campaign, one to be studied by political masterminds for generations. But rival Sharron Angle also ran an epically terrible campaign, one that comes with a sidesplitting blooper reel for the DVD. . .

  1. I agree and disagree. First, i agree, Angle ran a horrible campaign. If she ran commercials like Kent Davenport, she would have kicked Reid's butt, but she didn't and instead, relied on bobble head commercials in the beginning of the campaign. She ignored bloggers and didn't go on the fried chicken dinner circuit. She chose to hang with the big money people. She got the money but lost the votes. She also counted heavily on talk radio and that didn't work out so well.
But Reid did not do a very good job as well. He was viscious and I don't think most people liked that. He used his union thugs and that didn't go over so well. He just wasn't likeable and he didn't do much to change that situation. He also said a bunch of stupid stuff.
Someone who did run a good campaign was Joe Heck. He mixed up positive commercials and negative ones and he won over the incumbant.

  2. I agree and disagree too, Dan! The thing about Sharron Angle's campaign (and her surrogates) that bothered me most was the implication that Reid "played dirty" and was distorting and lying about her. As far as I could tell--and I'll admit that I didn't research EVERYTHING--all Harry Reid did was quote her. "Out of context" and all that, I know, but how do you put "Second Amendment remedies" IN to context?

Angle on the other hand had plenty of distortions, inflations and untrue stuff, particularly with illegal immigration.

Harry Reid said stupid stuff, yep. He's a profoundly inelegant and uncharismatic speaker. Sharron Angle said EXTREME stuff, some of which she didn't completely disown. In a perfect world, we'd have had a better choice. Maybe the Chicken Lady wasn't so bad? :)
