Say Goodnight Irene, and Hello to Katia

They're so cute when they're little. Image from source.
Jose, we hardly knew you. Yes, Jose has come and almost gone already, while Irene sputters out. But there's a new one on the horizon already: Katia. Here's hoping she sputters out like Jose, and doesn't give us chapter two in: all hurricane news, all the time.

New tropical system forming in the Atlantic

Just as Hurricane Irene was downgraded to a post-tropical system after grazing the East Coast, forecasters say a tropical wave south of the Cape Verde Islands, off Africa’s west coast, has a near 100 percent chance of developing into the next tropical cyclone of the season. If it reaches tropical storm force levels, it would become Katia, the 11th named system of the season. . .

Chicago: The Day After Tomorrow, TODAY!

This picture just blew me away. It was cold here in the Las Vegas desert today, but our temperature span ranged between the twenties and the forties.  I wore a sherpa hoodie today, not even a winter coat! I'd like to say I feel your pain, Chicago (and the rest of the country), but I'd be lying!

Giant Ice Monster Consumes Most of the United States

Whoa! So, I guess I shouldn't complain about our temperature dropping down to 34 (feels like 22!) here in Las Vegas? Hey, that's cold for us!

Thanks to my sister, Jen for the link.

Media Picks Up on Las Vegas Snow Storm

Image from source, Huffington Post

Believe me, as shocked as the media is by the snow storm in Las Vegas, it doesn't match how we residents felt! I moved to the desert to escape this stuff. Still, it's kinda cool. I mean, it looks like it's late evening instead of night time. Everything's all glowy. But the trees are creaking, and I'm not sure that the roofs and vegetation out here are made for the weight of snow.

LAS VEGAS SNOW: Strip Covered In Snow

Tourists and residents of Las Vegas alike received quite a shock as a snowstorm blanketed sin city's most famous monuments. It also caused some
travel headaches:

The ongoing snowstorm has stopped flights from landing or leaving at McCarran International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. . .

Amazing Shots of Lighting over Washington DC

I'm not religious (to say the very least), but doesn't this look like somebody's retribution for all the nefarious deeds done in Washington, DC? The shot was taken by one of my favorite bloggers, and inspirations for this site, John Aravosis. Great shot, John!

And there are several more. Check them out at: AmericaBlog

UPDATE: For a dose of unintentional humor, go over to my archives, and click June 2008. The post that appears immediately after this one completes the joke!

Brrrr! Winter Weather, but Not in Las Vegas!

Photo from source, AOL News

I sit in my office this morning, trying to get the blinds closed enough that the bright sun doesn't distract from my monitor. It's brisk here this morning, but to people in much of the rest of the country, it's downright balmy. They've been warning since Thursday that we were due for rain, storms, wind, "winter storm warnings" for the ring of mountains that surround the Las Vegas valley. So far though, it's a beautiful day!

Not so in the upper parts of Nevada. I've always heard that Reno, Tahoe and Carson City (and Truckee, across the state line) were brutal in the winter. . .and I've always wondered why people live there! The Other Half and I keep toying with the idea of moving back to the Midwest at some not-so-distant date, to be near the family. Then I see stories like this one, and think, are we insane? We get two or three below freezing nights per year here on average! I wear a fleece jacket, unzipped most of the winter! Brrrrrr. . .no, I certainly like the desert in the winter time.

And don't forget, winter is only two weeks old. . .

Winter Storm Pummels Western States

Still more snow piled up Sunday in the western U.S. mountains, where at least 5 feet had fallen from a storm that contributed to flooding, killed at least three people and blacked out thousands of customers on the West Coast.

At least 5 feet of snow had fallen on ski areas in the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains by early Sunday, with 9 feet possible at some higher elevations, the National Weather Service said. As much as 3 feet more could hit the area by Tuesday evening, the weather service said. . .
