Blast from the Past: Christmas Specials!

Postings to the blog have been light, I know. I've had a very busy weekend, even though we haven't started decorating for Christmas. Time just gets away from you. Even as I type this, there are several other things I should be doing.

So, my idea for this week's edition of Blast from the Past, was simply to post all of the classic Christmas specials I can find, in full! If I can find it, you'll see it below. Here we go. . .

Top 10 Craziest Things Said by Newt Gingrich

How could anyone pick just ten?

[Excerpt]

10 of The Craziest Things Newt Gingrich Has Ever Said

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is the latest not-Romney to capture the attention of GOP primary voters. With a solid lead in three early primary states, he’s giving the erstwhile front-runner a serious run for his money. While Newt may be the flavor of the moment, the Iowa caucuses are just three weeks away, so while he's behind in fund-raising and has had trouble organizing a nationwide campaign, it's impossible to count him out. . .

Atheists and Gays Against Perry

Here's a very well done, and very funny parody of (and response to) Rick Perry's anti-gay, pro-religion ad.

President Obama an Appeaser? Go Ask Bin Laden!

I don't blame the President for being so blunt. Being called an "appeaser"--much like being accused of treason--is a grave insult. You might not know that from how cavalierly talk radio and FOX "News" throw such loaded terms around. But they are historically and by definition very serious terms.

Santorum: No One Has Ever Died Because They Didn't Have Health Care

In a year full of stupid, Rick (don't Google me) Santorum takes the prize. What a boob.

Santorum: No One Has Ever Died Because They Didn't Have Health Care

. . .“The answer is not what can we do to prevent deaths because of a lack of health insurance. There’s — I reject that number completely, that people die in America because of lack of health insurance,” Santorum said to a crowd of 100. . .

FOX & Friends Finds Someone Dumber Than Them: Victoria Jackson

Apparently, when the classic 1986-1992 cast of Saturday Night Live disbanded, Dana Carvey, Jan Hooks, Nora Dunn, Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman (RIP) went on to interesting careers, while Dennis Miller and Victoria Jackson went bananas. Well, conservative, which these days is the same thing. At least Miller is plugged in and informed, even if he's desperately unfunny. Victoria Jackson inspires laughter of a sort: nervous laughter. She's seemingly unbalanced, clearly "educated" by FOX "News" and FreeRepublic.com. And she's seemingly still playing an SNL character, twenty years (and fifty pounds) later.

Rick Perry's Homophobic, Dishonest Ad

I know that politics is dirty. I know that many politicians play fast and loose with the truth. But in addition to being homophobic--criticizing active-duty gay soldiers--it also is outright dishonest. Kids can't celebrate Christmas or openly pray in school? Yes. They. Can. Organized, school-led prayers are not allowed. Teaching the Christmas story as truth is not allowed, because it is largely (or totally) a myth. Is this Rick Perry's plan to inch back up in the polls? Lie a couple of times and take potshots at soldiers? Great plan. Douche.

And finally, what's with this "Obama's war on religion?" Is that part of, or in addition to the fake FOX "News" War on Christmas?

Hillary Clinton Calls for World to End Anti-gay Discrimination

Image from source, Los Angeles Times
Wow. This is really a first. An American call to other countries to end anti-gay discrimination?  That is very cool. And it was Hillary Clinton, part of the Barack Obama administration, who did it. I wonder if this will help squelch any lingering resentment from gays and lesbians over a) the Obama/Clinton fight in 2008, and b) the perceived slights toward the gay community from Obama? I think it might.

Hillary Clinton calls on world not to discriminate against gays

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called on world leaders for the first time Tuesday to stop discrimination against gays and lesbians, announcing that the United States would use diplomacy and $3 million in aid to help expand the rights of gay people around the world. . .

Computer Woes: Skynet Is Alive! (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Success!!! The computer was updated, cleaned up and damned near perfect, considering it was built in 2003. A damned sight better than the Pentium III it replaced. I hooked it up at work Tuesday morning, and with a little help from the laser cutter people, we were back up and running.

This is not what happened, because of me! Or wait, maybe in spite of me?
Until closing time. I was on my way out the door, having stayed late to help my bosses with their new Android phones. I looked out the front window, and FIRE!!! Our laser room, which is across the parking lot from the main building. The bay door was open, and the laser table was on fire. Not a little smouldering, a full-blown blaze. Now, I can't tell you that I'm 100% sure the new computer setup didn't lead to the fire. But I don't think so. And I also think the computer survived the fire. Can't say the same for the laser cutter. More will be determined tomorrow. I figure, I discovered the blaze, I called 911, and an employee put the thing out before the fire department got there. So, I escaped before being trapped by a fire truck! Hopefully, all of it will be sorted out, and the problem will lie in a shorted wire or an ungreased threadscrew or something.

But, I can't say for sure that it wasn't caused by Skynet. Particularly when you figure my old computer was rescued from a closet, only to be banished to the laser room with no internet connection. . . So, the plot thickens.

ORIGINAL POST:

I'm serious, I think there is some sort of computer conspiracy, but I'm not sure if it's caused by humans or by the machines themselves. First, I started to notice that every computer I use (my home PC, my home MacBook, and my work PC) started seeming dreadfully slow. My work PC started randomly losing all of its printers. My boss's computer refuses to keep a printer driver function at all. Certain programs on my work PC suddenly seem to need to be run as an administrator.

But it gets worse. Even after loading a "cleaning" program on the Mac, it's still as slow as molasses. My previous bargain basement Celeron laptop was faster. Then, my home PC--less than 3 years old--died a stone cold death. I related this on the blog when it happened. Immediately after, one of our work computers crapped out. Then I revived it, then it was dead again. As a stone. We ordered a new computer on Cyber Monday for a sweet deal, and while we were waiting for it? Another work computer died. And the new one is too new to run the machines! Wonderful! I've had several calls from other people whose computers have also wigged out. I'm thinking we've got a few weeks, maybe months. And the machines' plans will be clear. But will it be too late?

Anyway, right now, I'm playing Dr. Frankenstein on one of my old computers to see if it can be cleaned up enough to use at work. So, the blog might suffer for the evening. Just so you know, the machines haven't got me. Yet.

President Obama's Still Gives Great Speech

On Tuesday in Kansas, Barack Obama gave one of his best speeches in recent memory. If I didn't know better, I'd think they stole my idea of hiring Aaron Sorkin to write his speeches. It's the kind of thing we've been wanting to hear for a very long time. And when you realize that he's harkening back to some of the very things Teddy Roosevelt--a Republican, remember--was talking about a hundred years ago, you realize how far today's GOP is from its roots.

Why is Newt Gingrich Called Out as a "Scam Artist" Only by Rachel Maddow?

Newt Gingrich has made a lot of money in his political career. Initially, he did it as an actual politician. Since then (after leaving office in disgrace), he's been a lobbyist "historian," an author of political books, a FOX "News" employee and the face of several related organizations that made money by scamming people. Lots of people. For lots of money. So, why is it that the only prominent member of the media who will say so is Rachel Maddow? Granted, Rachel's take on the issue is very entertaining to watch, and difficult to top.

I was going to write about this, last time Rachel spoke on the issue, and I forgot. Now, I don't have to! The article excerpted below did a nice enough job. Before that, though, is one of Rachel's early Newt takedowns. There have been many since, but this one is comprehensive.

Why Do Other Pundits Skip Maddow's Reporting on Newt's Alleged Scams?

Maddow first pointed out how Gingrich - apparently mistakenly - chose a strip club as the recipient of one of his scammy awards. The catch, of course, is that in order to pick up their award, recipients needed to fork over $5,000.00 to Gingrich's organization. The award got more attention than Gingrich probably wanted, when the strip club owner - seeing the humor in the situation - gladly accepted the award, anxious to show off the signed gavel owed her. Maddow reported that Gingrich rescinded the award and the dinner invitation that went with it, when he realized the nature of the business involved. Unfortunately, that didn't stop Gingrich's organization from trying to scam the same business later on. (In the end, the gavel was passed on to Maddow as a souvenir.). . .

Lawrence O'Donnell Eviscerates Donald Trump

Too much hyperbole in the headline? Too graphic? Well, pick your verb, Lawrence O'Donnell trounced Donald Trump and all he stands for, and smacked around today's GOP in general. It was a thing of beauty. I don't often catch The Last Word since it changed time slots. But with Trump in the news, I knew it would be worth it.

Herman Cain: The Night I Groped Some Chicks in Town

Another hilarious one from Mike in Raleigh of The Stephanie Miller Show. This one is particularly clever. It's to the tune of Joan Baez's The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (Virgil Caine is my name. . .). See? Clever.
