Burying the Lede: ExxonMobil's Profits

I found the headline of the excerpted piece below kind of stunning. The big news here, of course, is that ExxonMobil's profits for 2008 were the highest ever recorded in all of human history. But this article highlights the fact that their 4th quarter wasn't quite as big as the rest of the year?

Greenlee Gazette Psychic: Exxon-McCain!

Much of my blog, like many others, consists of links to other people's work. That's the nature of blogging, though I do try to editorialize, and occasionally write posts that are entirely or mostly my own. It gets weird when something I think I thought up--like the McCain attack ad "The One" being a Left Behind allegory--has been thunk by others already.

Other times, I'm pretty sure I thought of something first. Or at least earlier than some of the mainstream press. I've been surprised on many occasions to see something I've editorialized about turn up a couple of days later on Countdown with Keith Olbermann, for instance. That always gives me a smile, because I feel a little psychic.

But in this case, I plum missed the boat. In this post, John McCain "In the Tank" for Big Oil?, from July 24, I created an "ExxonMcCain" graphic to accompany the post. Little did I know, it could have been a money maker! Damn!

Exxon-Mobil's Historic Profits: More than Anybody Ever

Yeesh. ExxonMobile's profits lead me to ask a few questions of any conservatives who may have happened upon my blog on accident.

First, if demand is down, and supply is static, how do oil and gas prices remain so high? Second, if ExxonMobil only raised the price of gas enough to keep its profit margin, why did they make so much money? Shouldn't profits remain static? And third, while I understand why people like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are carrying water for Big Oil, why are you?

I've seen and heard ordinary Joe Citizen conservatives leaping to Big Oil's defense. Enthusiastically, they swallow whole the utter bull crap that off-shore oil leases and drilling in ANWR is the answer. They want to give Big Oil even more wealth. Assume it was all true, and that oil would flow freely. Do you think that's for us? No, it would be sold on the world market, and ExxonMobil gets even richer. I seriously don't see how this comes down to conservative vs. liberal.

Exxon-Mobil "Anti-Gay," Even According to Anti-Gay Groups

Exxon-Mobil may or may not be evil, but they are making more money in profit than any other company in the history of human kind. And they are doing so while we all pay more for gasoline than we have ever had to pay. Let's see. If you are a company, and the cost of making your product goes up, you naturally raise your prices. But after you do so, you'd think that your profits would stay static. Unless you're raising your prices far and away above what you need to, right? Am I missing something here?

So, you'd think that Exxon-Mobil would be on everybody's shit list for price gouging, wouldn't you? But no, if you're a group that exists only to put your boot heel on the necks of gay and lesbian Americans, you'd think that's just terrific, as long as you're seeing things the way they do.

So let me ask you, which thing lights up your life more. . .stepping on gay people, or paying more for gasoline? It's sort of your choice. . .
