Americans have a notoriously bad memory when it comes to politics. The cyclical nature of things ought to get us by sheer repetition, but they don't. Every four years, we have the same freak-outs over how these things happen. Though, truthfully, even having Sarah Palin on stage eight years ago couldn't possibly have prepared us for the Trump show. So, this year, we get a partial out for being just gobsmacked by THAT particular element.

John Oliver Explains the Refugee Vetting Process

The chief fear regarding Syrian refugees seems to be that somehow terrorists will sneak in amongst the incoming flow of refugees. How this same fear doesn't apply to terrorists infiltrating Christian refugees (that the right wants to let in) isn't clear, but that's not important right now. What is important is, that the acceptance of refugees into this country is not a simple process, and would be possibly the least likely route a terrorist would take to get here. So, could we please just calm the paranoia just a bit?

In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris, 31 U.S. governors now oppose the resettlement of Syrian refugees in their states. On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver described this as “pretty extreme, but also pretty meaningless” due to the fact that governors actually don’t have that power, as well as the fact that Syrians could simply walk across state borders, which Oliver noted “are not crocodile-filled moats. . .”

But here, Oliver gets the point across in a way that isn't boring, and gives you the details on how to do something about it.

Like catch and release fishing, but all the fish are brown. I thought that having Jon Stewart away for the summer would be kind of a drag. It turned out that John Oliver was a fantastic replacement, and ought to be able to use this as a launching pad for career advancement.

For the first time since Jon Stewart took his summer break from The Daily Show, Stewart may have reason to fear for his job. Fill-in host John Oliver started fairly strong, and has only gotten better. And with his report on the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin trial verdict, he was truly every bit as good as Stewart. I know they share a team of writers, so the words are going to be there, but this was a terrific, funny and spot-on piece. If The Other Half weren't asleep, I would have stood up and cheered. Cheerioed? Great job, Mr. Oliver!

Left Behind: Samantha Bee Examines the Plight of Persecuted Christians

I'm consistently amazed that The Daily Show with Jon Stewart John Oliver is able to line up guests for their roving reports. That they have yet to discover that they are the joke, I don't know. Such is the case with reporter Samantha Bee's mock sympathy over anti-gay Christians who feel persecuted because it is unfashionable to openly malign gay people. It's both hilarious and a bit disturbing. These are nutty people.
