Mexico Strikes Gay Marriage Ban

Okay, so that happened. Our neighbors to the north have had marriage equality for years now, and so far, "GOD" has not smote them. And now, our neighbors to the south have also seen the light, and are well on their way. What could it be about this country when we are bested by Mexico? I mean, it's not like they don't have religion down there, right? Maybe it's just that they don't have nutball, batshit religion? I'm going with that.

GOP Debate Audience Boos Mitt Romney's Mexican Roots

Romney looks like Ken, Gingrich looks like a Fisher-Price person.

I avoided the first half of this most recent debate, mostly because I didn't know there was one until it had already started. By that time, I was watching my Rachel, so I saw no point in changing the channel. I did catch some commentary during TRMS, by reading my twitter feed. My feed is populated so many funny politicos and comedians (and porn stars), I can't bear to watch a debate without them. But after Rachel was done, I did switch over. It's the same thing, only minus Jon Huntsman vacillating between being rational, and being a a hard-right zealot. And there is something still missing, what with Cain and Bachmann out.

The one steady thread through most of the debates is the audiences. For the life of me, I do not know why they've turned debates into a spectator sport. These things are supposed to be serious, dare I say it, even sorta classy. Not this year. They've booed and hissed at a gay soldier and a hypothetical dying man, while cheering executions. They might as well hold these things in The Coliseum.

GOP debate audience boos Romney’s Mexican heritage

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney may be in the lead in the Palmetto state, but that doesn’t mean South Carolinians necessarily like him.

During a Fox News debate at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Monday, the Republican audience booed loudly after being told that Romney’s father was born in Mexico. . .

LOOK OUT!!! ZOMBIES!!! Hencho En Mexico.

Image from source
We here at Greenlee Gazette have a special dark, dank, flesh-eating, lovable place in our hearts for the undead. With exception to the Walmart Zombies... those things are fucking creepy!
So, when we hear about thousands of zombies descending on a city... We're as giddy as schoolgirls.
We loves us some zombie hordes!

Thousands of zombies descend on Mexico City

A ghoulish parade of the "undead" numbering almost 10,000 descended on Mexico City in what organisers claim is the largest "zombie walk" ever held.

Wearing blood-spattered rags and make-up displaying festering wounds, the "zombie hordes" wandered through the heart of the capital groaning and stumbling.

Asbury Park in America currently holds the Guinness world record for the largest zombie walk after 4,093 zombies marched through the area in 2010.

Casino Terror Attack in Mexico

Image from source, Huffington Post
Thankfully, this is not one of my usual What Happens in Vegas posts, but that doesn't make it less horrific. Even before September 11, 2001, I wondered about both terrorism and mishaps in the casinos here in Las Vegas. We all know of the big fires at the MGM Grand and Hilton in the 80s, but it's kind of amazing that since then the incidents have been few and far between. Accidents aside, there's no denying that big attractions like casinos (and amusement parks, and national monuments) are big, giant targets for potential mayhem. No matter how stringent they get at the airport (here's my shoes, my belt, my watch, my wallet, my Chapstick you sonovabitch!), what's gonna stop a crazy zealot from walking into a casino with a bazooka? I'm glad it hasn't happened here, but I'm also amazed that it hasn't. Happy Cinco Tres de Mayo!

White people playing Mexican (from Igougo.com)

Today is an nearly annual event for my surrogate family out here in Las Vegas. Before moving here nearly 15 years ago, I'd only recently even heard of "Cinco de Mayo," the Mexican Independence Day. I guess we didn't cover Mexican history much in school, and immigrants from south of the border were just not very numerous in central Ohio back then.

But here in the Southwest, the holiday is fairly widespread. So we gringos take advantage of the event as an excuse to drink margaritas and cervezas! Not to mention our bastardized Ameri-Mex foods. Because of this adopted holiday, I probably won't be posting a whole lot today. So if you don't see anything new before late Monday, don't be surprised!

¡Fiesta!

Did You Really Think Obama Was Going to OK Pot?

Listen, I think that legalization of marijuana makes sense. It's a relatively harmless drug (at least when compared with nicotine and alcohol). Just about everybody, save the most priggish among us has tried it. For every hopeless stoner who frittered his life away, we know somebody who is a functional pothead.

Legalization would free up law enforcement for other, more important tasks. It could make room in our crowded prisons, by letting the petty pot dealers go. It could provide a revenue stream by way of taxes for state governments. It might help tamper the mess in Mexico.

But if you think a national politician--let alone the President of the United States--is going to champion the cause, you're freakin' nuts! AmericaBlog has a great post up about this very topic now, chastising those who want to throw Barack Obama under the bus for not sparking up a doobie right there in the White House. It's worth a read.

Obama and marijuana

I've been hearing through the grapevine that a lot of people are upset that Obama didn't come out in favor of legalizing pot today.

Uh, okay.

What happened was that Obama held his online town meeting today. During that town meeting, he answered some of the most popular questions that regular people submitted on the White House Web site (as judged by the number of votes people gave to each question). One question that got a lot of votes was about legalizing marijuana. In fact, there were several. It appears there was an organized effort to make pot legalization one of the top questions for Obama to answer. . .

Drunk Driver Plows into Bicycle Race

This is just one amazing photo. And how tragic that so many were injured or killed. Just wow.
