Don't Take Your Guns to Starbucks (Rocky Mountain Mike Song Parody)

Even a heart attack can't keep Rocky Mountain Mike down. Here's his take (to the tune of Johnny Cash's Don't Take Your Guns to Town) on the absolute asshats who insist on making public spectacles of themselves by carrying their weapons into Starbucks (and elsewhere). C'mon, gun nuts, isn't that taking your fetish just a bit too far?

Denver Has More Pot Stores than Starbucks!

"Mile High," eh?

Denver Now Has More Marijuana Dispensaries Than It Does Starbucks

In Denver, there are more medical marijuana dispensaries than Starbucks, according to The Daily.

Nearly 300 medical marijuana dispensaries have been established for Colorado's residence since the passing of Amendment 20 in the 2000 general election. And according to The Daily, some of these dispensaries, in order to help bring in business, even offer first-time customers a free joint. . .

Starbucks Changes its Logo

Image from source Sydney Morning Herald
I am a coffee fiend, but curiously not a Starbucks fan. I really have nothing against the chain, despite its ubiquity. I just prefer my coffee black: unsweetened, untainted by dairy products, with no frills, foam or dustings of spices. Oh, I can cut loose on occasion, but for the most part, just pour it from the pot, and I'm done. But as a graphic artist who specializes in logo design, I do have an opinion about Starbucks' latest logo revision: it stinks!

Okay, that's going too far. It doesn't stink, but it makes little sense. They basically took the siren/mermaidy thing out of the green circle, colored it green, and removed all the text.  So, it's the same logo, with the outside trimmed off. I honestly can't see an organization as large as Starbucks spending the big money to change all their signage to the new design.  "Hey, let's remove the name of the store from all the signs!" Why, that's marketing genius! Whatever they paid the logo designer was too much (and I'd have done it for half!).

My take is, they won't be using this as their only logo. It's sure to be an alternate logo, one used on some items but not others. The store is going to keep its name for god's sake. And I also predict a return to something closer to the more well known logo at some point. It's just too well known to abandon altogether.

Starbucks Stirs Ire With New Logo
Starbucks, the world's biggest coffee chain, has unveiled a new logo that omits its name and the word "coffee", infuriating loyal customers.
The new green logo is essentially Starbucks' representation of a female siren - a half-human mythical temptress who led sailors to their deaths. The change, announced overnight during a webcast of a company meeting, comes as Starbucks is building new billion-dollar brands sold outside its cafes. . .

Am I Stuck on Stupid Too?

Why do I ask? Well, the post immediately below this one is also a "Stuck on Stupid" post, about a religious protest to Starbucks' new/old logo. But after skimming the site that is sponsoring the boycott, I'm thinking the whole Starbucks thing is just a hook to get people to visit his site.

I first heard about the boycott on The Thom Hartmann Show on Air America Radio today. Thom had been talking to this guy, Mark Dice, for a while before I started paying attention. I only got to hear the bit about Starbucks. And in retrospect, the guy sounded like he was gaming Thom. If so, good on you Mr. Dice--assuming that is your real name.

Here is a video from the site, and a link if you want to figure this one out along with me. Maybe he's a hoaxster, really good at self-promotion. Maybe he's just cuckoo for Coacoa Puffs?

United and Delta Airlines to Merge?

Bill Maher used to joke that with all of the corporate mergers, we'd be down to "OnliBank." And now maybe we could add "OnliAir." Two of America's biggest and most historic airlines are talking merger.

I don't think they'll ever all merge down to one, but if the trend of other industries holds, there may be only two or three in the end, right? For office supplies, you've got Office Max, Office Depot or Staples. Pet stores? Petco and Petsmart. Hardware? Lowe's or Home Depot. Coffee? Starbucks and, well. . . there's just Starbucks.

This one is a little more troublesome, because The Other Half works for one of the airlines in question. And if there's one thing I've learned it's that the various factions within the industry don't usually take these things well. Stay tuned.

Delta, United Fly On Merger Talk As Market Stumbles

Delta Air Lines and UAL (United Airlines) are the subject of merger speculation, after an investor with stakes in both carriers began pushing for a tie-up.

Delta released comments Wednesday afternoon responding to a letter in which hedge fund Pardus Capital Management, a shareholder in both companies, urged the airline to lead industry consolidation with a merger. . .
