Back when I used to go to The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Columbus, Ohio at Graceland, one of my favorite parts of the evening was the pre-show. Usually, that meant some Tim Curry or Meat Loaf videos. And Paradise by the Dashboard Light was one of the best.

While writing about Charlie's Angels, earlier, I remembered a fantastic song by Tim Curry, star of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In his song "I Do the Rock," he mentions the stars of the show, and it has always been one of my favorite songs. They used to play this at the theater before The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The trip in Ohio is almost wrapped up. I still have one more visit to make with my sister, and the husband and baby. Then back to Las Vegas. I hope to have the blog back to speed by Tuesday evening. See you then!

Halloween Horrors: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

I've covered several genres of horror movies over the last several days, and I thought it was time to do a post on a non-horror, but purely Halloween flavored movie: The Rocky Horror Picture Show! It has "horror" in it's title, but you will either be delighted or bewildered, not terrified.

As most people know, Rocky Horror was originally a stage musical in England, made its way (not very successfully) to the States, and then was developed into a motion picture by 20th Century Fox in 1975. It may have hit our shores a bit too early for people to "get" it, though, and it flopped. Somebody got the bright idea to market the film as a "midnight movie," and RHPS took off. It's been playing regularly in theaters around the country, every weekend for over 30 years.

My first contact with RHPS was on something called "Telecinema," a precursor to HBO, probably around 1976. I was 10 and deeply didn't get it. But a few years later, it became a staple of High School life. It was a way for all kids, gay, straight, jocks, nerds--all of us--to get together and have a good time. We did have a little difficulty explaining to our parents the rice trails we left from the front door to our bedrooms in the wee hours of the morning.

RHPS

was unavailable for many years, though eventually was released on VHS, and later on DVD. If you can get your hands on the 25th anniversary edition, it's chock-full of extras, and elaborate photography, in a deluxe case. A must have for a "regular Frankie fan."

12/26/07 UPDATE: A warning folks, but is wont to happen with these clips, FOX has apparently pulled many of their videos. While all of these are still here, they've pulled all of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Simpsons clips. I fail to see why, as all these YouTube clips do is keep interest going in their projects, and raise the profile of their properties. My site has made a whopping 81 cents since it debuted, and I can't even cash that out. I am not putting a dent in Rupert Murdoch's profits. Anyway, it probably won't be long until these are gone too.

You'd expect me, a far-left loony blogger, to be offering Susan Sarandon birthday wishes, because I agree with her political ideology. You wouldn't be entirely wrong. I do agree with some of what she and her husband, Tim Robbins have to say. Sure, they can get strident, and like Richard Gere (and countless other FOX "News" punching bags) don't always come off in the best light.

Thankfully, as a liberal, I am free to be a fan of Susan Sarandon's politics and acting without a binary, all or nothing attitude. If she's said something particularly wacky, I don't have do disavow what she said, or stop being a fan. It's that nuancy, shades-of-grey thingy at work. Same thing goes for Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand.

But leaving politics aside, my favorite Susan Sarandon moments will always be from the 1975 cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. She spent years trying to live it down, but these days embraces the role. So, to combine politics with frivolity, here she is, in all her 70s glory!
