Civil Marriage to End in Alabama to Thwart Gay Marriage Ruling?

Okay, first of all, this doesn't make very much sense. Secondly, it would probably be unconstitutional. It is also pretty much the definition of "cutting off your nose to spite your face," and "taking your toys and going home, if you don't get your way." But overall, it doesn't really seem to fundamentally change anything either. I'm not sure what problem this "solves," if people can still sign a marriage contract. Apparently, they're just eliminating the licensing step? I would think the only effect is to deprive the state of some fees. But, I guess symbolically, they get to prove--yet again--that Republicans are mean, and that legal discrimination is a central tenet of the GOP/Evangelical religion.

Santorum Has Frothy Victory!

UPDATE 7:57 PM: Santorum wins Mississippi.

As I type this, Rick (don't Google me) Santorum has won the Alabama primary, and seems poised to win the Mississippi one too, or come damned close. Pretty amazing, considering that Mitt Romney has all the money, and that Santorum was an afterthought until sometime in February. He had the virtue of sharing the "Not Romney" title with Newt Gingrich, along with not being Gingrich. Why Newty is staying in (at this moment) is beyond me. Maybe by the time you read this he'll have dropped out.

Anyway, Santorum earned his Google nickname by being a nasty, hateful dude. And he has not wavered from that personality trait. I am not cocky enough to predict that if Santorum wins the GOP nomination, that President Obama wins by default. But I certainly think it would be Obama's to lose. There are other factors, I know, like gas prices and the general economy. But Santorum is utterly incapable of tacking to the center. He's a hard-right guy, even though some hard-right nutters think he's not hard-right enough. If I woke up the day after the election, and we had a President Romney, I wouldn't be happy. But if I woke up to a President Santorum? Well, that's a nightmare, and I won't be able to tell if I ever woke up!

This a fascinating and well written exposé on the US Attorney firing scandal. I know my some of my readers (and contributors!) are of a more conservative extraction, and are less likely to jump to nefarious conclusions on this issue. In response to Simpson’s affidavit has been a series of brusque dismissive statements – all of them unsworn – from others who figured in the discussion and the federal prosecutor in the Siegelman case, who has now made a series of demonstrably false statements concerning the matter. She’s been smeared as “crazy” and as a “disgruntled contract bidder.” And something nastier: after her intention to speak became known, Simpson’s house was burned to the ground, and her car was driven off the road and totaled. Clearly, there are some very powerful people in Alabama who feel threatened. Her case starts to sound like a chapter out of John Grisham’s book The Pelican Brief.
