But now--unlike the rest of us, whenever we move or get new jobs--he never has to do it again! Weinergate: Conservatives Really Want it to be a Scandal

I don't know what to make of the Anthony Weiner (D-NY) "Weinergate" scandal. On one hand, it's a sad statement on the state of politics and news that this is the biggest thing being talked about. Would I be squealing like a stuck pig about it, if this were a high-profile conservative? Probably, but only if they happened to be a "family values" conservative. Anthony Weiner hasn't ever been a sanctimonious prig, so the newsworthiness of the story lags behind the gossipy nature of it.

My take on it is this: Anthony Weiner is a very outspoken liberal who is hated by right-wingers. Andrew Breitbart is a sleazy (even by conservative internet rabble-rouser standards) opportunist who loves to slop mud on people, truth be damned. Anthony Weiner probably had some naughty pix of himself somewhere (though he mustn't have many, or the actual image wouldn't be airable on The Daily Show). Whether or not it was for himself, his wife, or somebody else, I don't know, and it isn't our business. Weiner has dodged the "is it really a photo of him" question, likely because it is. But I have heavy doubts that he actually sent it to anybody, at least not on purpose. My hunch is that somebody culled his phone/online photo album/whatever, found this one salacious shot, and then faked the tweet.

It will really suck if this takes down a good Congressman. Because, I'm doubtful that anything illegal, or possibly even unethical happened. And I'm positive that the people involved in breaking the story are capable of fakery and lies. That much is proven.

It is certainly possible that Representative Anthony Weiner sexted a young woman who lives in Washington state. My own theory, based primarily on the fact that the only person who seemed to notice the Tweet supposedly sent by Weiner was a creepy right-winger who is obsessed with the New York Democrat, is that one or more of the congressman's social networking profiles were phished or otherwise compromised, as he says. But I could be wrong! (I'm also inclined to believe that if Weiner were sending inappropriate photos to young women, he'd send them directly and not via a public photo-sharing site. But politicians do dumb things!). . .

So, internet scumbucket entrepreneur Andrew Breitbart--a man of zero credibility--is claiming that liberal favorite Anthony Weiner (D-NY) has tweeted an image of his wiener. Actually it's a picture of a pitched tent in a pair of boxer briefs, but why quibble? As there is nothing identifying in the shot, it would be impossible to say whose wiener it is. And like I said, Mr. Breitbart has a huge credibility problem. Anyway, the picture is risque, not pornographic, and hey, at least it's not a dinky winky. I guess this passes for news now. Breitbart has risen to such heights, hasn't he?

Colbert Report: Tiger Woods Nike Commercial Parodies

No news stories bore me more than celebrity sex scandals. For some reason, I love political ones. I guess it's just that if they're not elected officials, and they're not being flaming hypocrites in the process (family values Congressman whooping it up with hookers, etc.), I don't see it as newsworthy. If it has a surprising angle, or one of the celebrity couple is a hottie (Sandra Bullock/Jesse James), it might capture a smidgen of my attention. But usually, whether I really like the celebrity in question (David Letterman) or I couldn't give a care (Tiger Woods), I just want the story to go away.

All that said, the parodies of Woods' "comeback" Nike commercial (the one with his dead dad's voice lecturing him) are inspired. Particularly the one with Gene Wilder from Young Frankenstein. Brilliant.

Odd Olbermann/Maddow Rumor Put to Rest?

As a blogger, I have run into a couple of sticky situations where my comments were found to be objectionable by the very people I was writing about. In these cases, I was yanked down to earth a bit, having forgotten that I was talking about real people who could--you know--read what I had to say about them, and then take me to task for it.

Now, it isn't in my nature to be overtly nasty or inappropriately critical. Er, most of the time. But I'm quite capable of being wrong, and of being snarky and sarcastic. Snark and sarcasm are fun, but most of us do not like to be the target of it.

If you have a nightly television program, you have an opportunity to address those who disparage you in a much more flashy forum. Keith Olbermann did just that, after becoming the subject of a viral Internet rumor. Watching the video is slightly uncomfortable for me, knowing that I could have furthered the rumor had I happened upon it. As a fan of Countdown with Keith Olbermann, I likely wouldn't have, except to possibly comment on the inanity of the rumor. Bloggers do after all have the right to post only those stories on their blogs that interest them, or that they have something they want to convey. Reporting on cat-fights behind the scenes on a cable news station don't fit into that category. Unless it's Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity, but I digress. . .

I mean, she couldn't really have said that, right? I mean, I know that at the time she didn't know--nor did anybody else--that she'd be picked as John McCain's running mate. I've spent a lot of time on this blog posting about political sex scandals. Usually, they have to do with holier-than-thou ultra-conservatives caught with hookers, soliciting sex in bathrooms, having an affinity for diapers. . . You know, schadenfreude stuff.

Democrats are not immune. Sometimes the urge strikes them too. Jim McGreevey, former governor of New Jersey had his own sex scandal in the days before I started this blog. He got busted for putting his alleged boyfriend on the payroll. And his wife was a little miffed about that. She parlayed her ordeal into a book deal, and has been on the talk show circuit. All through it, she claims she was hoodwinked, and thought her husband was straight.

This story would seem to prove otherwise. . .
