Rand Paul Tries to Put Conception Amenment to Flood Bill

Okay, you guys, just stop it. Stop it, right now! Yes, we know that you care about almost nothing besides abortion, and gettin' the black dude out of the White House. But it's getting old.

The first time I saw a story about a "personhood" bill, I thought it was just sloppy. They couldn't really want to give a zygote full-human-being status, could they? They can't really believe that there is a full-fledged human the day after you've had sex. . .right? But they do. They couldn't really have meant to outlaw some forms of contraception in the process, that was just unfortunate verbiage. Right? Nope, turns out the really crazed anti-abortion crusaders do want contraception banned.

But it doesn't play very well when put to a vote. It lost in Mississippi of all places, badly. And yet they keep trying. While the GOP racked up many victories in 2010, they did it on the promise of jobs, jobs, jobs. On which, they've done nothing. It's all abortion, all the time!

Michigan GOP Overreacts to the Word "Vagina"

Honestly. If the GOP is insisting upon ramming through law after law restricting a women's right to choose, how in the world can they object to the word vagina. I mean, come on, I'm a gay guy who probably thinks about that word less than anybody, but even I don't find it to be an offensive word. And it was funny! A well-crafted joke up against humorless, tight assed busybodies. Well, the GOP isn't well known for its well developed sense of humor (see: Miller, Dennis).

Jan Brewer Signs Crazy Anti-Abortion Law

Republican Governors and legislatures seem to be in a competition for which one of them can overreach the most. At least two of those Governors are up for recall, less than two years into their tenures. And Jan Brewer, the dragon lady catcher's mitt Governor of Arizona has topped them all. Many states have been enacting draconian anti-abortion laws since the GOP cleaned up in the 2010 elections. But as far as I know, none dared claim that life begins two weeks before conception.

The real reason for that audacious claim is so that the counting starts earlier, and that the 20-week limit becomes 18. So one more time, they're passing laws that chip away at what seemed to be settled law. And they seem to be turned back the clock to the time of back-alley abortions.

Governor Jan Brewer signed into law the hideous bill that redefines a pregnancy as beginning at two weeks before conception. That's the earliest of any state, so if you want to get a jump start on living, try to be conceived in Arizona. The law effectively bans abortions after 20 weeks gestational age—err, 18 weeks if you're using the old counting system—except in cases of medical emergency. As draconian as it sounds, it shouldn't change much since very few of those abortions are even performed in the state at the moment. . .
