In Case You Missed It: Obama's Post-Debate Ad

Working mostly evenings on this here blog thingy, I often miss hot topics that percolate during the day. But I also realize that not everyone catches these things right as they happen either. Anyway, I was glad to see the President rebound from his panned debate performance, right into a boisterous rally, and that his campaign has already culled some Romney footage and parlayed it into a pretty decent anti-Romney ad. Here's hoping he keeps it up, and carries it through the rest of the debates.

In Case You Missed It: The Political Ad by The West Wing Cast

Bridget Mary McCormack is running for Supreme Court Justice in the state of Michigan. We wouldn't know about that, except that her sister was an actress on The West Wing, who got together with much of that cast (including Martin Sheen!), and filmed an ad for her. Such a thing could come off cheap, tacky and embarrassingly. . .except for the fact that it is brilliant! I now am sad that I bailed on TWW after season five or so. Maybe I need to go watch them on Netflix. If you ever liked the show, watch the ad. And maybe you should also look into the non-partisan part of the ballot. . .

New Obama Ad: Mitt Romney Sings America

You will not see every pro-Obama ad on this blog. But you will see the good ones, and this is a good one. I'm impressed. Skewering Romney's stiffness and awkwardness without saying a word (via the singing), and leveling charge after charge against him for his business practices and apparent lies on the subject. Brilliant.

New Obama Ad: We've Heard it All Before

A lot of people used to complain that President Obama didn't have enough experience to be president. Well, they probably still do. But what is Mitt Romney's experience? Four years as a fairly unaccomplished governor (except for RomneyCare, which they're not touting much), and being a vulture capitalist. But really, for the last several years, he's just been a professional campaigner for office. And last time out, he was beaten by the guy who was beaten by Obama!

Serial Liar Mike Kirk's Opponent Makes Kick-Ass Ad

I hope Nevada's own Sen. Harry Reid takes notes from this ad. Not to say that his opponent, Sharron Angle is a liar per se (though she is stretching the truth to the breaking point, while backing away from earlier statements), but she is a friggin' loon. Harry, pattern your ad after this one, just frame it from the batshit crazy angle.  Heh, I said angle.  Should've capitalized the A.

Everything Old is New Again: Today's GOP

Funny that the Democratic National Committee came up with this ad. Because yesterday when I was flipping through the Sunday political gabfests, I wondered, why are they trotting out these old has-been Republicans to speak for their party? This is what they've got?

New Barack Obama Ad: A Stronger Economy

Leave aside the policy issues in this ad (ie., the important stuff), and just focus for a bit on the more superficial. After all, that's what Republicans are doing with Sarah Palin. It's what they did with George W. Bush. For whatever reason, they like these people, and their personal foibles, cluttered pasts, and lack of gravitas don't matter a whit. The want to have a beer with W. (ironically an alcoholic), and to skin a moose or watch a hockey match with Palin.

So, let's take a look at what's on the surface here. We have a plain-spoken, articulate man, speaking directly to us. In identifiable English. It's even in complete, properly structured sentences. Bush and Palin are incapable of that, though each in their own ways. Obama seems calm, smart, upright, decent. . . Would it be so bad to vote for a person with these reasons at least #2 or #3 in your mind when you cast that vote?

I for one am tired of being embarrassed when our President visits a foreign country. I'm tired of the crazy dances, the inappropriate smirks, the groping of foreign leaders. I'm tired of the Bushisms. Most of all, I'm tired of having a President that speaks in colloquial Tex-English no matter where he is, or what he's saying: Nuttin. Iddn't. Wuddn't. Sick of it!

McCain may not have that problem, though he does wander off into Grandpa Simpson "onion belt" stories. And there's that creepy laugh of his, along with smirking. And Palin? Her heavily accented, flinty voice saying phrases like, "I’ll try to find ya some and I’ll bring 'em to ya." Oh ya, oofta, oofta! It would be like hearing St. Olaf stories for four or eight years!

So, please America. Vote for the guy who will at least sound nice, look presentable, know when to put his serious face on, and know when it is appropriate to have a little more levity. Please?
