Shutting Up the "Birthers" for Good?

The title of this post is taken from the excerpted piece below. I do not believe it accomplishes that goal. I do not believe it is possible to accomplish that goal. If a home movie of President Obama's actual birth appeared, shot in the actual Hawaii hospital, with actual identifiable nurses and doctors, they wouldn't believe it. If that same movie showed the original long-form certificate of live birth being written and signed while Mrs. Obama beamed, while cradling little Barry. . .they still wouldn't believe it. I do believe, however that the basis of all of this is race. They can deny it all they want to, but this was never an issue with previous presidents. Why now, if not race?

FOX "News" Trashes Innocent Woman in Race-Baiting Ploy

There has been a concerted effort by FOX "News" and its allied partners in right-wing world to get white people to feel they're victims of racism.  It's nothing new--I think Sean Hannity invented the term "reverse racism"--but it has picked up steam lately.  There was the overblown, two-year-old story about the New Black Panther Party. There was the overblown response to a tepid statement from the NAACP warning tea baggers to repudiate the racists in their midst. And now, there's the railroading of a seemingly decent woman, Shirley Sherrod, by Andrew Breitbart, painting her as an evil racist within the Obama Administration.

This led to an unfortunate, knee-jerk denouncement of Sherrod by the NAACP itself, and a forced resignation by the Obama Administration.  The NAACP has made amends. I hope the White House does as well.  They've fallen for the FOX spin far too many times already.

The entire story was bogus, an edited tape taken out of context, representing the story to be absolutely the opposite of what happened. You know, the FOX "News" stock-in-trade.  The story is complex if you're not familiar with how these faux outrage stories bloom.  So, while I was going to try to avoid any Rachel Maddow Show clips for a couple of days, I could think of no better way to explain it all. This is primo stuff.  If you haven't seen it, please watch.  The second clip is worth a view too, but the choice bits are in the first clip (good stuff starts at 1:35).

Tea Party Topples Top Teabagger

This whole tea party thing is getting confusing. Sunday morning on Face the Nation, there was a black guy, David Webb, speaking for the movement. . .when did that happen? He was speaking for the Tea Party Federation. How that ties to the Tea Party Express, the Tea Party Patriots, Tea Party Nation, the Tea Party Party, (and I'm sure I'm leaving some out) I have no idea. But since the movement's message is so diffuse and vague, I guess it makes a sort of sense.

There seems to be a genuine effort afoot to start some sort of race war though, with FOX "News" and right-wing talk radio leading the charge.  All of the squawking about "the New Black Panther Party"--by all accounts a minuscule movement--that occurred two years ago is part of it. The extreme overreaction to a rather tepid pronouncement by the NAACP about tacit acceptance of racism in the tea parties is another.  It's going to get worse--and stupider--before it gets better.

The National Tea Party Federation has expelled conservative commentator and Tea Party Express spokesman Mark Williams over a fictional letter Williams wrote on his blog last week from "Colored People" to Abraham Lincoln.


"We, in the last 24 hours, have expelled Tea Party Express and Mark Williams from the National Tea Party Federation because of the letter that he wrote," federation spokesman David Webb said Sunday on CBS's "Face The Nation. . ."

McCain Supporter Attack a HOAX

I was right! I put up a highly skeptical post yesterday, one hyped to the rafters by The Drudge Report, about a young McCain supporter who was mugged, robbed, beaten and "mutilated" (actually a scratched, backwards "B" on her cheek) at an ATM in Pennsylvania. The story had holes, but I didn't want to dismiss it outright and come off like a heartless bastard (not that I'm not one, I just don't want to appear so!).

It turns out the whole thing was a hoax. Which is just the latest embarrassment for Drudge, and for highly reactionary wing-nut sites like Free Republic. When I viewed initial reaction to the story on FR, only minutes after the breaking news, they were in a frothy lather, ready to bring on a full-scale race war, and planning to stock up on ammunition this weekend. That's because the hoaxster described her attacker as a big, black Barack Obama supporter. Nice, right? It's not as funny as the faux outrage over Obama's use of an "Obama Flag" that turned out to be a State of Ohio flag, but it is predictable.

This story stunk pretty badly, and I'm not surprised that it turned out to be a hoax. But will the crazed reactionaries take back what they said yesterday? Somehow, I doubt it.

John McCain Befuddled at Press Conference

This video shows three camera angles of the same question. I wondered at first, why would they do that? And by the first few seconds of angle #3, I had my answer. John McCain looks absolutely lost, befuddled. He's groping for an answer, "All right. Um. . .first of all. . .um. . . . . . .the first quest. . .you said. . .why am I?" I was expecting a General Stockdale, "Who am I? Why am I here?" question next!
