John McCain Was Against Campaign Clothing Allowance?

By now, you all have heard that Sarah Palin spent $150,000 on clothing hair and makeup over the last six weeks or so. It sounds like a frivolous story, and it would be were it not for her "one of us" Joe Sixpack/Joe the Plumber image. And it's a bit of schadenfreude for Democrats, given the drubbing John Edwards took for his $400 haircut.

But wait, there's more! Did you know that in 1993, John McCain was against allowing candidates to use campaign money for personal purposes, such as clothing allowances?

MCCAIN: Madam President, the amendment before the Senate is a very simple one. It restricts the use of campaign funds for inherently personal purposes. The amendment would restrict individuals from using campaign funds for such things as home mortgage payments, clothing purchases … and vacations or other trips that are noncampaign in nature. […]
