Supposedly the root of all Democratic "underground" activity (read: evil), according to the right-wing, is billionaire George Soros. Bill O'Reilly even has flowcharts on the issue. They don't even have to prove it anymore. Despite repeated denials, MediaMatters.org, NewsHounds.us, DailyKos.com and others are all allegedly funded by Soros.
I have no doubt that Soros is rich, that he's liberal, and that he's spent a good deal of his money on Democratic causes. Does that make him evil? Moreover, does that make him unique?
Republicans have their own well-documented "underground" network of think-tanks and networks, and they also have their fair share of monied bigwigs, funding some of that activity. Rev. Sun Myung Moon owns the Washington Times. Mega-rich media mogul Rupert Murdoch owns FOX "News," and a plethora of other publications and media ventures.
But Soros' counterpart on the right is Richard Mellon Scaife. Also a multi-billionaire, also a big spender for conservative causes. He was heavily involved in finding something, anything to derail the Bill Clinton Presidency, and ultimately succeeded. (Sidenote: aren't you kind of nostalgic for the days when a big scandal involved Socks the Cat's fan club or the Clintons' Christmas card list?)
So what is the deal here? Why does Soros = Evil, while Scaife = Who? on The O'Reilly Factor, Hannity & Colmes and FreeRepublic.com? Hypocrisy anyone?
