This is right up my alley, for a number of reasons, but chief among them: the cartoonishness of Donald Trump. I'm glad that some of the air is finally going out of his balloon, and hoping it either pops or just slowly pffffts in a twirl, down to the ground.

But I call the Powerfrown the "Nurse Diesel," with apologies to Cloris Leachman.

Donald Trump's HUGE Announcement Flops

Donald Trump would get no attention from me, were it not for the fact that his fumbles and foibles cast a shadow on the Republican Party, and afford me a bit of schadenfreude. The man is nothing short of a buffoon, but he enjoys a place in the pantheon of "Conservative Superstars." That illustrious group includes nobodies like Samuel "Joe the Plumber" Wurtzelbacher, pundits like Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin, and quasi-politicos like Sarah Palin. None of these people is worthy of adulation, but they get it anyway.

The one thing the Conservative Superstars live for is to get their name in the news cycle. Palin just did it, by using the racist term "shuck and jive" when referring to President Obama. Coulter did it by calling him a "retard." But that's small potatoes to Trump. Trump makes news. Trump announces in advance that he's going to make an announcement! Trump stirs up anticipation in Right Wing World, getting them to salivate, and twitch with anticipation! When Trump postponed his announcement for 15 minutes from the earlier noon, I thought Right Wing World would just lose it!

Then, when they were right on the edge--almost there, you might say--Trump dumped a buzzkill. A lame ass, barely veiled racist challenge to President Obama. No secret. No scandal. A ridiculous call for school records. Pfffft! This pompous windbag has finally deflated.

Donald Trump is a Moron, Mitt Romney a Chump

This should be embarrassing. This, at least. I know that politics--at least on the Republican side--is scarcely different from professional wrestling. But something should be a bridge too far, something should be off the list. That a buffoon like Donald Trump tries to bigfoot his way into politics is not surprising. But that the now official nominee on the Republican side would actively court Trump's endorsement; to effectively use him as a campaign surrogate. . .that should be embarrassing.

And let me be clear. It isn't just that the Donald is a birther. That's stupid enough, of course. There isn't a shred of legitimacy in that loony nest of self-contradictory conspiracy theories. But it's that he's a bad birther. He loosely strings together snippets of birtherism, mangles them and gets them wrong. He talks about Obama's grandmother saying Obama was born in Kenya. . .but it was a step-grandmother, one who was mistranslated, one who corrected the record in the same interview. And he doesn't just get shit wrong, he lies at the same time. Is there anyone gullible enough to believe that Trump really hired investigators and sent them to Hawaii? Or that if he did (he didn't), he won't talk about it now, because it's "old news?" I know birthers are thick, but even they should see through this clown. And Romney should have backed away long ago.

The Big Donald Trump/Newsmax Debate Cancelled

Now, why shouldn't we take this elegant man seriously?

Well, it's not like you couldn't see this coming. It was a ridiculous notion in the first place. And I'm not just talking about the oafish Donald Trump, but the odious Newsmax. I mean, why not a World Net Daily or a FreeRepublic.com debate? Good grief.

The fun part has been watching it devolve. The Donald is far too arrogant and self-important to just own up to the fact that it wasn't happening. No, he had to slowly downgrade it, while maintaining that those who wouldn't attend were cowards. It was kind of the white-mogul version of Herman Cain's "lie first, change story later" routine. But thank you, Mr. Trump, for proving that even this clown show could get even more ludicrous.
