So, That Happened: Get Your GOP Fashions!

I'm on several mailing lists for things I'd never be interested in. Sometimes, I'm there on purpose, just to keep tabs, you know. Sometimes, it's from signing a petition to a tangentially related cause. Sometimes you don't know where the heck it came from, I mean BeliefNet? AARP? ChristianSingles.com? So, it's unsurprising for me to be peddled to by groups I will never buy from.

Reince Priebus (vowels removed, it's RNC PR BS, y'know) sends a lot of useless--sometimes unintentionally humerous--money begs. This one, I'll grant you, isn't hilarious, it just struck me as good for a chuckle. I mean, first of all, the shirt in the shot looks like it would fit a slim young man, who couldn't possibly be a sizable portion of the base of the GOP. I'm thinking Ls and XLs would be rare, and that they should stock mostly shirts in multiple Xs. And secondly, I just can't picture seeing hoards of people at "upcoming barbeques, sports games [Ed: sports games?], and 4th of July celebrations" wearing this shirt, as the email suggested.

It's actually a nice looking shirt, and the GOP logo is even attractive (though, what's up with the upside-down stars, anyway?), but what the Republicans represent these days is meanness, contrariness, antagonism and more meanness. Even Sean Hannity claims to be a "conservative" these days, rather than a Republican. So, I'm thinking, if you load up on these bad boys, the people at the barbeque will be cutting a wide berth around you.

Steven Weber: Dumbo Is an Elephant

Image from Treehugger
Yesterday, actor/blogger Steven Weber wrote an excellent post, drawing a line from Ronald Reagan to Sarah Palin and beyond, on the very strange freight train to stupid going on in the tea bagger-driven Republican Party.  Once again, he takes the words out of my mouth better than I ever could have spoken them. Read on.

Dumbo Is an Elephant

I guess it started with Reagan.

Affable, avuncular, radiating easy optimism. Dense thicket of black hair.

And pretty much a dolt.

Ol' Ronnie set the stage for the wave of irrational neanderthals and walleyed feebs who, able to regurgitate hallowed bygone maxims and ooze five-and-dime patriotism . . .

Upside Down Stars on Elephant, Now on Donkey?

As a graphic artist, I am perplexed by the upside-down stars on the GOP Elephant. They weren't always that way, but it's hard to nail down exactly when, or exactly why the change happened. Lots of people "know" why, as you'll see if you do a Google search. But the answers are either vague or contradictory.

Some even try to say that the stars are not upside down, merely tilted to the right. Piffle. Tilting could be 5, 10, 15, even 20 degrees. The way these are drawn puts the stars perfectly upside down. And at that angle, they could be tilting left as much as right. Perhaps there is something to the conspiracy theory that they are upside down as a sign of distress, as that is what an upside-down American flag represents.

At left is a way to turn the stars right side up, effectively.

Curiously, while reading America Blog, I found that CBS News has done the same trick with the Democratic donkey. This is a symbol that now has no stars, but CBS--for reasons unknown--has inverted stars on the little guy. The official symbols, with only slight changes by yours truly, are at the top of this page. CBS' version is in the excerpt below.

GOP Sells Sickly Green Elephant

Hey, the GOP is down on its luck these days, and desperately needs a bit of cash. I've tried to help them out a bit by showing off their regular elephant, their drunk gay pink elephant, and now they've got a green one.

The last two were cute at least. This one looks either like it's green with envy, or is deathly ill and ready to puke! Either metaphor works for me.

GOP Selling Cute (Not Scary!) Elephant

Once again, the GOP sent me more mail, even though I tried to get removed from their list. Today, they are trying to get their supporters to send in $35 for a cute little stuffed elephant. Nothing wrong with that, aside from the curiously upside-down stars in the GOP logo. . .I'm still surprised the religious right hasn't done something about that. It's far cuter than the GOP convention logo, what with that elephant's "wide stance" and scary trampling pose.

So next time you hear that all the GOP has to offer is fear, you can know it's not true! They also offer cute, but over-priced plushies!

I have to admit to having a soft-spot in my heart for the GOP symbol, since my Mom had a stuffed red, white and blue plush Nixon elephant hanging in our rec room for years!

Should you wish to order this one, and separate yourself from $35 in the aim of continuing the tragic stretch of Republican-rule, here's the link: Click here to order yours today.
