Yeah, I'm being snarky, but this does smell slightly of desperation. The original GOP elephant was cute, hey I even posted a link here (even if that was snarky too!). But "Maxine" hits my funnybone too. "Pink Elephants," after all can be a pop-culture reference to the hallucinations a drunk gets during delirium tremens. It can also refer to Log Cabin Republicans.
But the most likely image to enter some peoples' minds (OK, mine!) is your standard issue GOP closet case. Larry Craig, Ted Haggard, or Mark Foley (but Foley liked elephant calves). And naming the thing Maxine is a little odd, too. Maxine, after all, is the moniker given to the irascible, contrary old woman on countless Hallmark products. Not a warm and cuddly image!
