Seen at the "Values Voters Summit"

This was spotted at the oh-so-moral-and-Christian "Values Voters Summit." Why these extremists attract any mainstream Republican speakers and support is a mystery. If I were a career politician, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near them. But I can nearly guarantee you that nobody there will denounce this sort of thing, even though it was clearly created by a lunatic.

The Gay Thing: My First Real Gay Pride Parade!

At the ripe old age of 47, I've finally been to a gay pride parade. Well, a real one, anyway. I've been to a couple here in Las Vegas, but unless things have changed in recent years, it was a rather sad, very brief affair. Not so in Palm Springs.

We were in Palm Springs this weekend to see friends who were in from England for a visit. It was only by coincidence that it was gay pride weekend (which the desert locales have apparently switched from spring to autumn in recent years). I found out a few days ago when I saw that Joe Jervis of  JoeMyGod.com (my favorite blog) was the grand marshal. Happily, I got to meet Joe, and we were able to not only see the parade the next day, but had a ring-side seat at a sidewalk restaurant. Unfortunately, all of my pictures are either out of focus, or framed by rows of specators. But in person, it was an excellent vantage point.

The most notable thing about the Palm Springs Gay Pride Parade was how PG it is. Well, maybe PG-13. But there were kids all around, nobody was freaked out or having any kind of distress. There was an overwhelming spirit of joy and dare I say it, gaiety. Everyone was having a good time, whatever level of freak flag they were willing to fly! By-and-large, people were just people. There were folks of all ages, sizes, colors and styles. My entire group was of middle-aged to senior gay men, dressed in ordinary summer attire. There were of course flamboyant costumes, and full-fledged "cos-play." There were drag queens, mostly of the very over-the-top, highly exaggerated variety. And everything was just fun.

You know how if you hand your camera phone to someone
else, they never get it right? That's why this is blurry.
Also why I look so fat, I'm sure. I'm really as svelte as
Joe Jervis is! Joe.My.God. himself.

Being in that environment, it was difficult to figure out exactly what all of the negativity about gay pride really is. If there was any lewdness or "depravity" going on, it was not in plain sight. And while I'm sure there was plenty of sinning going on, it sure looked like fun to me. And Palm Springs surely saw huge revenue boosts from all of those people in town.

Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are: Matt Drudge & Shepard Smith

"Inside baseball" is what they call it when you discuss something that is a "you had to be there" kind of situation. But I think this translates just fine. There have been calls from the right wing for FOX "News"
host Shepard Smith to come
out of the closet. I have no personal knowledge that Smith is gay, but the rumor is on the level of a Tom Cruise/John Travolta-level, which is to say, high. So, the question can be posed, if the right is going to demand that Smith comes out, what about a nearer-and-dearer closet case? Should Matt Drudge be dragged out, kicking and screaming, from his glass closet?

One of my favorite bloggers, Joe.My.God. has asked that very question. And gotten an answer!

Irony Alert: Anti-abortion Coat Hanger

It took me a second to find the very dark ironic humor in this one. Just think about it for a second.

The Conservative Lineup for the 2012 Presidential Election

I love this. It is a graph by Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight.com, showing all of the (known) potential candidates for President on the Republican side of the aisle for 2012. The graph is divided in quadrants, with varying degrees of "insider" or "outsider" on one axis, and "conservative" or "moderate" on the other. Note where Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann fall on the scale. And also note the heavy quotient of whack-a-doodles and no-way-in-hell-they'd-ever-wins.

Fun With Google Instant

Have you noticed that Google has changed to Google Instant?  It's pretty nifty.  Just go to google.com, and start typing. You'll see what I mean.  This video will show you what it does, in a very entertaining way, set to Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire.

What REALLY Happened at the Jan Brewer Debate Fiasco

I suspect that this isn't far from the truth.  Remember George W. Bush's "mysterious bulge" at the debate with John Kerry? The strange pauses and the "let me finish" when no one was speaking?  I'm just sayin'. . .

Airplane of the Future: Standing Room Only!

Image from source, MailOnline
Looks like the seating on a "stand-up" roller coaster, doesn't it?  When you hit turbulence, do you raise your hands and go, "wheeeeee!"  Doesn't look like as much fun. Better be a hell of a first drop. . .

[Excerpt]

Ryanair to sell standing room only tickets for £4... funded by charging passengers to use the toilet

Air passengers might soon be able to fly from just £4, with ample leg room to boot.

There’s just one small catch, it seems – they’ll have to stand.

Instead of being allocated a seat, Ryanair travellers would perch on a narrow shelf and lean against a flat padded backboard. . .

FOX "News" Fail: Favored Candidate, Tim Burns, Loses Despite Big Push

It's nice to see that once again, despite a big push by FOX "News"--a channel that will never be accused of subtlety--Republican Tim Burns lost anyway. I haven't checked to see, but I'd bet that today they were claiming that it was no big deal. Or that the election was rigged. Or both.

Musical Spoof: Web Site Story

Brilliant! West Side Story told for the web-connected world! I'm not even a musical fan (hard to believe, but true), and I loved it.

Valentine Video: Till The End by Tim Goss

This is a nice, pleasent, all-inclusive Valentine-ready video, which I found at Joe.My.God. It's sweet, and it's nice, and I don't care if it bothers people who can't see that. Enjoy.
