Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, the Rankin-Bass classic stop-motion Christmas classic was on CBS last night. I missed the old spinning "Special CBS Presentation" animation. In fact, I changed the channel. I watched Rudolph last year, and I really think it's best enjoyed with a little more distance, to let the nostalgia build up.
Instead, I found a great spoof from Mad TV. Imagine Rudolph as interpreted by Martin Scorsese. . .

This clip just ran on Mad TV, and it really cracked me up. The joke is the rather unphotogenic personalities seen on British television. I don't know about their news programs, but did you ever watch Are You Being Served? or Keeping up Appearances? On those an many other British shows, many of the performers are just regular people. . .in some cases dentally and physique-ally challenged.
The backdrop used for the woman reporter is area I've visited called Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset. The Other Half's friend (and witness at our wedding) Brendon once lived near there, so when I saw this I knew I had to post it. Enjoy!
I keep promising to insert more frivolity into the mix of news an politics, just to make things a little less dour around here. Thank goodness I have friends that send me story ideas and clips.
Thanks to my friend, Kevin, for sending this link along. It's from Mad TV, lampooning the ending to The Wizard of Oz, and it addresses an issue that always bugged me about the film. Namely, why didn't Glinda the Good Witch just tell Dorothy she could go home any time? Maybe Glinda was just a little bit wicked?

OK, I'm having a frivolous post run here today. But hey, I have incendiary political posts in spurts, so why not fun stuff?
Football season is upon us again, and as a native Ohioan, I'm obliged to support the Buckeyes, even if I have no genuine interest in football. If you're from Ohio (particularly Columbus), you're a Buckeye by default.
This video is from a couple of years ago on MAD TV. It was something of a heyday for the show in my opinion, when Josh Meyers (Saturday Night Live's Seth Meyers' brother) and Ike Barinholtz regularly teamed up for comedy.
The gag is, of course, the inherent homoeroticism (usually unacknowledged) of team sports, and sports fandom. And you have to give credit to Meyers and Barinholtz for their fearlessness as actors. Even in this day and age, unabashed same-sex attraction--even in acting--is a rarity. Of course it helps that it is painfully funny. (Incidentally, it would have been just as funny if the characters were Wolverines fans. . .)
