Tuesday Was a Big Gay Day!

The gay rights victories have been piling up of late. This is--I'm sure--much to the consternation of groups like National Organization for Marriage and Pope Palpatine.  Screw 'em, we've been kicked around long enough!

America the Stupid: 26% Don't Know We Won Independence from Britain

Woo-hoo, we're #1! USA! USA! Wait, what do those letters stand for? Uhhhmmmm. . .Shit. . .Armenia?  God, we're stupid. Sooooo stupid.

Celebrate, America! 74% of You Know What Country We Declared Our Independence From!

Marist University saw that the Fourth of July was coming up and decided to commission a poll to show how stupid we all are. The question: “From which country did the United States win its independence?” Marist was surely expecting only 2% of Americans to know the answer. CNN.com was also prepared for the results with a “more than 1 in TK Americans don’t know which country America declared its independence from, the dumb freaks” story. Yet America surprised them all! . . .

Glenn Beck & FOX "News" Banned at Grocery Store

I'm glad I'm not the only one annoyed by being subjected to FOX "News" on random televisions. I'd like to see more of this.

Atheist Bus Advertising Campaign in Britain

Image found at DemocraticUnderground

Here's another one from the vaults; a subject I meant to talk about some weeks ago, and never got around to. And it is about a subject near and dear to my heart: public, outspoken disbelief in religion. Our culture is so steeped in religion. And we non-believers are expected to respect and tolerate anything said or done by the religious.

It is not uncommon for agnostics like me--a gay one to boot--to be told with authority that I'm a sinner, that I'm going to hell, and that I'm going to burn forever. I'm expected to think that "In God We Trust" on the money, "One Nation, Under God" in the pledge, and countless other overt mixtures of church and state are just the way it is. And I'm supposed to shrug off the fact that religious people donated millions of dollars to have my marriage nullified. At the same time, I am to expect no deference or respect for my lack of beliefs. In fact, the religious are allowed to hurl insults and invective at me for my sexuality and my lack of belief with near impunity.

So it is heartening to see a little in-your-face activity from my side for a change. Even if it is in Britain. Can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth if this bus advertising campaign was going on in the states?

Atheists Send a Message, on 800 British Buses

The advertisement on the bus was fairly mild, just a passage from the Bible and the address of a Christian Web site. But when Ariane Sherine, a comedy writer, looked on the Web site in June, she was startled to learn that she and her nonbelieving friends were headed straight to hell, to “spend all eternity in torment.”

That’s a bit extreme, she thought, as well as hard to prove. “If I wanted to run a bus ad saying ‘Beware — there is a giant lion from London Zoo on the loose!’ or ‘The “bits” in orange juice aren’t orange but plastic — don’t drink them or you’ll die!’ . . .

Mad TV Takes on the BBC

This clip just ran on Mad TV, and it really cracked me up. The joke is the rather unphotogenic personalities seen on British television. I don't know about their news programs, but did you ever watch Are You Being Served? or Keeping up Appearances? On those an many other British shows, many of the performers are just regular people. . .in some cases dentally and physique-ally challenged.

The backdrop used for the woman reporter is area I've visited called Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset. The Other Half's friend (and witness at our wedding) Brendon once lived near there, so when I saw this I knew I had to post it. Enjoy!

Should America Rejoin the British Empire?

Photo from source, Asylum

This article tickled my fancy. Now, don't get me wrong, I love America--despite being a liberal! I even wore a star-spangled shirt yesterday for the Independence Day celebration. But I think it is fair to say that America has seen better days. And while I hold out hope for a change in direction, if John McCain were to somehow win in November, the points laid out in this article would be a lot more persuasive.

Dear Americans,On this day, 232 years ago, the Declaration of Independence was signed and sealed, forming the United States as its own nation and ending your colonial union with Britain and her empires. I think we can all agree, that idea has run its course. . .
