John McCain Picks Sarah Palin for VP Choice

Photo from source, CNN

Like many, I woke this morning to the news that John McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. Who? That was my first thought. Second, I thought, "well he picked one of the only people who can take some buzz away from Barack Obama's speech last night."

This is probably as close as I will ever come to "live blogging," since I have the day off from work, and am watching this unfold on the TV machine. MSNBC is a little wary of the choice. CNN is being very analytical about it, and FOX "News" is bubbling over with enthusiasm, right down on the floor with the chubby cheerleaders in the auditorium.

Oddly, the arena in Dayton, Ohio, where this is being announced, is going for a very homespun, down home. . .uh. . .homely look. I guess they think there is no way to compete with the spectacle of last night, so they're not even going to try.

I'm hopeful that this was a miscalculation by John McCain that there are more PUMAs out there than there really are. They were largely a media/right-wing creation, and don't likely exist in large numbers. Also, with the very real possibility that John McCain may be unable to fulfill a four- or eight-year term, it would put Palin into the White House with precious little experience.

More later, in fact likely sooner. . .
