Blast from the Past: Thompson Twins

They weren't twins, they were actually (usually) a trio. But they were one of the more interesting groups of the 1980s. Thompson Twins were fixtures of the first MTV generation, with a string of hits--some big, some more oddball--through the decade. When they first hit mainstream radio and video, they were breaking out of new wave or alternative, and looked the part. But because of the day-glo aesthetic of early MTV videos, they fit right in with Boy George and Culture Club, Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, Adam Ant and Missing Persons. I think they were just a little too "outside the lines" for lasting mainstream success, and maybe tied a little too tightly to the 80s to break out successfully. But it was fun while it lasted!
