There is a misconception out there in political discussion land, as it pertains to gay issues. From the right-wing, you'd think passing hate crime legislation outlaws negative speech about homosexuality. It doesn't. And as evidence, go to a right-wing site, and look up virtually
any story that has even a tangential relationship to something gay. Hatred spews like a fountain, as does really,
really bad, sub-junior high level "humor." So far, they aren't being arrested for hate crimes.
But the misconception goes further, assuming that liberals and the "librul media" are hyper-PC, and that the subject of homosexuality must be treated with reverence, and absolutely
no humor. No, the key is in how it is done.
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart gets it right almost every time. Sure, sometimes it can yaw a little over the line, but unlike
Saturday Night Live and
South Park (love 'em both, but 12-year-old humor can be hit or miss), you never feel malice from Stewart & Co.
