HS Secretary Janet Napolitano Stepping Down

Image from source, Washington Post
Good luck to her. I think she's been a good person in the job, but her installation there has given us a) Governor Jan Brewer in Arizona, and b) endless remarks from Right Wing World, calling her "Big Sis." Listen, I know that we on the left have our terminology for things. But do we think we're being funny and clever the zillionth time we say something? Okay, "tea baggers" is still funny. . .

Homeland Security Ends Ban on Green Cards for Gay Married Couples

For any naysayers who claimed that "nothing changed" with the Supreme Court DOMA and Prop 8 decisions, check this out. It isn't the end of the fight for equality, but it's a solid first step.

Homeland Security Formalizes End Of Ban On Green Cards For Gay Couples

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Monday formalized the end of the ban on gay married couples being able to receive green cards based on their marriage. Full-Body Scanners Violate Child Porn Laws?

Image from source, Raw Story

Wow, talk about your unintended consequences! And if they exempt kids, all those terrorists need to do is enlist their own 21 Jump Street program. Yikes!

Body scanners run afoul of UK child pornography laws

It has been said that terrorism is a zero-sum game. But try telling that to the manufacturers of three dimensional body scanners, the use of which at airports worldwide is set to soar after the failed bombing of a Christmas day flight into Detroit.

In the United Kingdom, however, a proposed "gradual" introduction of devices which take nude photos of their subjects has run afoul of child pornography law, according to British newspaper The Guardian. . .

Is That a Gun in Your Pocket, or Are You Just Happy to See Me?

Image from Air America Radio

Exhibitionists rejoice! You could be appearing nude--legally--at an airport near you! I don't know how I personally feel about it, exactly. But if your screener pulls you out of line for a random frisking, be very suspicious!

X-Rated Security Screenings at the Airport?

Image from source, CBS 2 Chicago

We've long accepted a complete lack of Constitutional rights at the airport. People who've travelled more than a few times already have the drill down: Take off your belt, your watch, your shoes; take your computer out of its case; get out your ID and ticket; put everything through the machine, and if you're lucky, gather all your stuff and waddle over to the chairs to put everything back.

But sometimes we're not so lucky. We get pulled out of line, our bags get ransacked, we're wanded. . .ooh! But sometimes it gets more serious than that.

Fliers Complain About X-Rated Security Screenings

When travelers go to the airport, they know what kind of security to expect: luggage searches, metal detectors and shoe inspections. It's all part of our post 9-11 reality enforced by the Transportation Security Adminstration.

But as CBS 2 Investigator Pam Zekman reports, thousands of travelers have complained that some of these screenings can become abusive and even x-rated. For arguing with a TSA agent, Robin Kassner wound up being slammed to the floor. She's filed a lawsuit. . .

Homeland Security Investigates Law Abiding Citizens

OK, all of you gun lovers out there. You got your hard-won victory in the Supreme Court defending your second amendment right to bear arms. For as many years as I can remember, gun enthusiasts have been railing against any whiff of gun control, waving the Constitution. And they have prevailed.

Now comes the time to put your money where your mouth is. The other amendments to the United States Constitution have been methodically eroded in this country since (and in some cases before) September 11, 2001. All in the name of security. The first amendment is curtailed, the fourth. . .and I do not hear defenders of the second complaining at all.

It would seem that abuse of the other amendments are A-OK, as long as it is the Republicans in charge. Or maybe you all just haven't been paying close enough attention. Read the following excerpt (and the story it links to), and see if you feel at least a little energized to start paying attention.

Finally, at long last, I have something in common with Muhammad Ali.No, I'm not the heavyweight champion of the world, and haven't been named spokesperson for Raid bug spray. Like "the Greatest" - not to mention far too many others -- I have been a target of state police surveillance for activities -- in my case against the death penalty -- that were legal, non-violent, and, so we assumed, constitutionally protected. In classified reports compiled by the Maryland State Police and the Department of Homeland Security, I am "Dave Z. . ."

Homeland Security Trading Access for Donations?

Image from source, Think Progress

I remember back during the Clinton administration--when no story was too dumb to blown into a "scandal"--a really big deal being made of access to the Lincoln Bedroom. Some sort of quid pro quo about supporters being allowed to stay there, or something; it really didn't interest me much.

But now, it seems that Homeland Security is doing much the same thing; trading access to administration officials in exchange for large donations to the George W. Bush Presidential Library. Liberry. Lie-bury?

[Excerpt]

The Sunday Times reports Stephen Payne, a Bush pioneer and a political appointee to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, was caught on tape offering access to key members of the Bush administration inner circle in exchange for “six-figure donations to the private library being set up to commemorate Bush’s presidency. . .”

Big Brother is Watching, Listening, Taking & Copying

The story below is but one example of our government's overzealous behavior as it pertains to "security." We have really given up just about every civil right we have as it pertains to privacy. There is nothing the government/George W. Bush will not claim is necessary, and apparently nothing that any other governmental agency will do to prevent it.

A question that gets somewhat glossed over in all of this is, what exactly are they looking for? Sure, they say they're trying to prevent terrorist attacks. They say that al-Qaeda is hiding behind every rock. And conservatives, by and large, nod their heads vigorously, and support whatever the government says.

Did you notice that seismic shift? The anti-government party; the same folks who's extremist wing holes up in Wyoming or Idaho with arsenals and survivalist gear are enthusiastically supporting this behavior.

Does anybody think that once the government has been given this much rope, that they won't try to use their newfound abilities for other things? Do we think they aren't using data mining for the war on drugs? The war against Democrats? Really?

Clarity Sought on Electronics Searches

Nabila Mango, a therapist and a U.S. citizen who has lived in the country since 1965, had just flown in from Jordan last December when, she said, she was detained at customs and her cellphone was taken from her purse. Her daughter, waiting outside San Francisco International Airport, tried repeatedly to call her during the hour and a half she was questioned. But after her phone was returned, Mango saw that records of her daughter's calls had been erased. . .

Bomb Parts Passed Airport Screenings

Photo from source, AFP

I just got back from a vacation across the country, and had the now familiar experience with airline security. I now dutifully remove all elements of metal from my body and put it in my carry-on, including my belt, watch, phone, keys and change. I then take off my shoes and jacket, and have them ready to run through the machine. I don't take any fluids (other than those within my body), and I make my effort not to beep when I go through the machine.

I had two direct flights, and followed this routine, but not without incident. On both trips through security, I was detained while the TSA searched my carry-on. They went through everything, from the afore-mentioned items, to my video player, MP3 player and--yes--my cans of Skyline Chili. They even commented on the coconut macaroons I brought back from LaChatelaine in Columbus.

All of that effort wasted, and then we get this:

Bomb parts passed US airport screenings: report

US undercover investigators successfully carried bomb-making material across security checkpoints during tests at 19 US airports earlier this year, a government report said Wednesday.

The Government Accountability Office report said agents were able to clear Transportation Security Administration checkpoints with components for making several improvised explosive devices (IED) or an improvised incendiary device (IID).

The two investigators concealed the materials in their carry-on luggage and on their persons. . .

Keith Olbermann Takes on Homeland Security
