KFC's Cheesy Bacon Bowl

I'd like to be appalled by this new Kentucky Fried Chicken menu item. But the truth is, I'm on the Atkins diet, and I put bacon in all kinds of things! In fact, leave out the breading on the chicken, and use mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes, and this one is just about Atkins-ready! Okay, I'd have to sub something for the corn, and maybe make my own gravy, but I may have to try it.

NEWS: KFC Tries To Prove Bacon Makes Everything Better With Their Cheesy Bacon Bowl

. . .Well, KFC is taking that power and adding it to their KFC Famous Bowl to create the Cheesy Bacon Bowl. All the goodness of a KFC Famous Bowl, sprinkled with chopped bacon, and all for just $3.99 at participating restaurants. . .

Blast from the Past: More 70s & 80s Fast Food!

Last week in Blast from the Past, I featured several classic commercials of the best era to grow up in, the 70s and the 80s (I say that, because that's when I grew up, duh). There were so many good ones, I thought it deserved a sequel. I mean, I could  run a "Top 10 Best Super Bowl commercials ever!" but that's probably being done all over the internets.

1. Wendy's - "Step aside!" This one's funny, but my favorite one was the one with the drive-thru: "Park it!" I couldn't find that one.
2. Burger King - Yes, that's Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
3. Kentucky Fried Chicken - 11 herbs & spices? Finger lickin' good!
4. Wendy's - Yes, again. As I said last week, Wendy's had the best and funniest ads of the era, and no list complete without the classic Clara Peller "Where's the Beef?!?"
5. Snapp's (Rally's) - Seth Green (Also of Buffy) starred in this ad, and also unwittingly put "ca-ching!" into the lexicon.
6. Taco Bell - Put a smile on your face at Tac-a-tac-a-taco Bell! Yeah, this one didn't really catch on.

Okay, that's it for this week. Happy Monday, everyone!

KFC's Grilled Chicken Might Cause Cancer?

And here I thought it was the fried chicken that would get you. Who knew?

[Excerpt]

Doctors' suit: KFC grilled chicken a danger

After losing its first battle against fast-food restaurants, a doctors group went back to court Wednesday and accused the KFC chain of selling grilled chicken with dangerous levels of a cancer-causing chemical.

In a lawsuit in San Francisco Superior Court, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine accused KFC of violating California's Proposition 65, which requires businesses to warn customers if they are being exposed to substances that cause cancer or birth defects. . .

FOX "News" Touts Phony KFC in Fallujah?

Image from source, TPM Muckraker

FOX "News" still seems to be trying to sell shiny happy Iraq stories. Their morning team on the oddly named FOX & Friends rhapsodized about a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Fallujah as evidence that we're winning in Iraq! Problem: it seems to be bogus.

KFC In Fallujah? Too Finger-Licking Good To Be True

Last Thursday, Fox News ran a brief segment on a KFC restaurant opening in Fallujah before segueing into an interview with former CENTCOM Commander Tommy Franks, who was asked to comment on the presence of an American fast food restaurant in the notoriously violent Iraqi city. "Do they have a drive-thru window?" Steve Doocy asks. "They get in and get out. And, so far, they do it safely," answers Brian Kilmeade. . .

What Exactly is "Honey Sauce"?

Being a heavy soda pop drinker, I learned long ago (about the time I started putting on weight), that soda is loaded with calories due to sugar, so I switched to diet only. Well, I should say, I thought it was sugar. These days, sodas are far more likely to be sweetened by high-fructose corn syrup.

High-fructose corn syrup isn't just in soda, though, it is seemingly in almost everything. Anything that is mass-produced, and tastes sweet (and even some things that don't) seem to now be sweetened with it.

But there are some things you'd never dream contain the stuff. Honey, for instance. Today, I thought it might be nice to add something different to my breakfast bagel at work. So, I went through the condiment bag and dug out some honey from KFC. Or so I thought.

I noticed that the packet (adorned with the Kentucky Fried Chicken patriarch's picture) read, "Colonel's Honey Sauce." Hmm. Honey sauce. What the hell is honey sauce? So I flipped the packet over, and read the ingredients:

  • High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Sugar
  • Honey
  • Corn Syrup
  • Natural Flavor
  • Caramel Color
Two kinds of corn syrup and sugar? Natural flavor from what? Color from what? Oh, and honey. Nice that they put that in somewhere. Flipping the packet over, I found the kicker:
  • 11% Real Honey.
Well thank goodness for that.

I wasn't the only one to ponder this topic, of course. From the internets:

My roommate and I just went to KFC for lunch, and I noticed something strange. The honey packets that came with the biscuits said "Honey Sauce" rather than just "Honey. . ."
