Right Wing World: WTF is Wrong with White, Conservative America?

I've voiced my discomfort and displeasure for the level of discourse in political discussion over the last few weeks. There is a far more strident, far more knee-jerk, hair-trigger defensiveness and offensiveness. It isn't confined to the extreme right-wing--or maybe even entirely on the right--but it is pretty much confined to white people. The same folks who are extremely defensive about being accused of racism (indeed, if they are, they'll claim the accuser is playing "the race card") seem to be eager to be openly racially antagonistic.

Image from source, NewsCorpse
After a series of high profile cases of black men killed by police officers being turned loose without so much as a slap on the wrist, many people--not just black people--have been very upset about what seems to be a pattern. Various forms of protest have sprung up, to keep attention focused on the problem. Though several of these cases can be murky to wade through, and often the victim is not as pure as the driven snow, the fact remains: if a cop kills a minority, regardless of his offense (and sometimes the "offense" isn't even a crime), it is rare for him to even be indicted, let alone tried for a crime.

Somehow, this has become a partisan issue, largely right-against-left. It's even been conflated with the torture report, with exactly the same battle lines, mostly right wingers in favor of wide latitude for torture and police use of force, versus the left against torture, and for more stringent review of police methods. Ironically, the right is usually against strong government power, apparently making an exception when it is used against people the right doesn't like. But here's where it gets really weird.

White people pointing guns at law enforcement at the Bundy Ranch.

Two police officers were brutally shot to death in New York City this weekend. And instantly Right Wing World turned it into a political firestorm. The killer (dead himself from a self-inflicted gunshot) is apparently absolved of the crime. Instead, it is the fault of President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder and Al Sharpton. I have no idea why. And it's frankly disgusting.

If this were merely some anonymous internet chatter, or in the hobbyist blogosphere, that would be one thing. But it's prominent voices on the right, media personalities, elected officials. What the hell is going on here? Why is the right so anxious to turn the deaths of fellow Americans into some bizarre counter-point to a protest movement? No serious figure on the left has advocated violence against the police, and if they have, they would be instantaneously denounced (seriously, if there have been any, I hereby denounce them this instant).

I know that Right Wing World has been racially on edge for a long time, and that for 6 years they've desperately wanted to use the N-word openly. I'm honestly very surprised it hasn't popped out on FOX "News" or talk radio by now. But this is nuts. And it overlooks a very, very important fact: Two Tea Party following, Bundy Ranch protestors left that protest, went to Las Vegas, and killed two cops. How many on the right blamed themselves and their own leaders for that? >crickets<

NAUSEATING: Fox News Absolves Cop Killer Of Responsibility For Murders

Conservatives have long portrayed themselves as the voices of personal responsibility. They insist that the traditional values encompassed by patriotism and faith demand that individuals be accountable for their actions. But when it comes to the brutal assassination of two New York police officers, Fox News exploits the tragedy to lay the blame on innocent people that they regard as political adversaries. . .

SNL: Mayor Bloomberg and Chris Christie Address the Press

The cold opening of Saturday Night Live was notable both for it's lampooning of Bloomberg's feisty sign language interpreter, and for the "Chris Christie" distaste for Mitt Romney.

SNL Skewers FOX & Friends Again

As a long-time fan (since the live first episode in 1975), I can admit that Saturday Night Live has few episodes that are funny all the way through. The key to whether or not they've had a good episode is a strong opening, a good first skit, and a funny Weekend Update. They hit all three last night. The rest of the Louie C.K.-hosted episode was mostly meh for me, but they hit it on those. The strongest bit of the night was the recurring spoof of FOX & Friends, the oddly-named FOX "News" morning program. As always, they've got a rich target to parody, with their "list of corrections" being the best part. Be prepared to freeze-frame!

One World Trade Center: Tallest Building in New York

Image from Washington Post
When I started hearing the buzz on this story, I thought that One World Trade Center was done. And I thought, "where was the buildup for that?" But it's not. It's just risen past the Empire State Building in height on its way up. Which is kind of a bummer. I mean, it's been almost eleven years. Living in Las Vegas where we (used to) put up mega-resorts in just a year or two. . .well, I just mean, what's taken so long?

One World Trade Center becomes New York’s tallest skyscraper

People look up at the One World Trade Center building, which is under construction on the site of the destroyed original World Trade Center in New York City. One World Trade officially surpassed the height of the Empire State Building today to become New York City's tallest building. . .

NYC Terror Threat: City Heightens Security To Counter Potential 9/11 Anniversary Threat

Security worker Eric Martinez wore a pin depicting the twin towers on his lapel as he headed to work in lower Manhattan on Friday, unfazed by a report of a credible but unconfirmed terror threat before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

He worked downtown then and lived through it. He still works there – and didn't hesitate to take the subway. . .

Is Rudy Giuliani Going to Run?

"Tho what if I look like Nothferatu, and thound like Thylvethter
the cat! 9/11!!!" Image from source.
I just have to say that (September 11th) I never imagined that (9/11) Rudy Giuliani would even consider (ground zero) another shot at the presidency. There was a time (September the eleventh) when Rudy seemed like he might have a shot. But he flamed out so abruptly and so utterly in his 2008 attempt, what on earth makes him think something has changed? Are they going to prop up Fred Thompson, and give him a go too?  Ugh. No, Rudy isn't even attractive a candidate as ol' Law & Order. He looks like a cross between Gary Oldman as Dracula and C. Montgomery Burns as Dracula. Ugh. Spare us!

[Excerpt]

Rudy redux: What's behind the Giuliani-for-President rumors?

Rudy Giuliani really might jump into the race for the 2010 Republican presidential nomination. That’s according to his friend Peter King, a GOP congressman who represents chunks of Long Island. Representative King told reporters on Monday that Mr. Giuliani “is very close to saying he’s going to run. . .”

What Happens in Vegas (Sorta): USPS Uses Wrong Statue of Liberty on Stamp

The New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas holds a special place in history, and in my heart. I was involved in the genesis of the resort.

I attended many of the start-up conferences regarding its construction. I was almost pushed bodily (and vehicularly) into the pit being dug for the basement levels, when foolishly driving across the work site in the path of an earth mover. I was involved with the construction of the Manhattan Express roller coaster, and the hiring and training of its first crew. I was in charge of operations the night that David Hasselhoff took the "first ride".

Las Vegas' Faux NYNY
This was in the waning days of my involvement with the amusement industry. But immediately after that career death, I began working in the signage industry in Las Vegas, and played a role designing much of the signage for the interior of the property. The company I work for even had a hand in the creation of the Statue of Liberty out front. It was around Lady Liberty's harbor that offerings of t-shirts and other mementos were left to mourn the losses of September 11, 2011. And by a stroke of outrageous luck, the New York-New York property--while containing scale replicas of many New York City skyscrapers--never included a copy of the World Trade Center towers. Which is all a long wind-up to toot my own horn as a tie-in to a story that involves Las Vegas' faux Statue of Liberty. . .

Oops! Statue of Liberty stamp shows Las Vegas lady

After printing 3 billion copies of a new postage stamp bearing an image of the Statue of Liberty, the United States Postal Service received a strange question from a stamp collector.

Did postal officials realize the photograph was not of the famed statue in New York Harbor, but of a less-feted fiberglass and Styrofoam replica outside a Las Vegas casino? . . .

Ron Paul Repudiates Republican Response to "Ground Zero Mosque"

Image from Think Progress
Yeah, I know, not at Ground Zero, not a mosque. Not the point. What is interesting here is that--crazy as he can be--Ron Paul got this one right. Or, correct, rather.

[Excerpt]

Ron Paul breaks with GOP on New York mosque: The opposition ‘is all about hate and Islamaphobia.’

In strongly-worded statement released today, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), a tea party favorite and perennial GOP presidential candidate, strongly condemned his “fellow conservatives” for opposing the proposed Park 51 Islamic community center near Ground Zero. The outcry over the mosque “implies that Islam alone was responsible for the 9/11 attacks,” Paul said, explaining that the rights of minorities must be protected, even when it’s unpopular. Ultimately, Paul argues that the opposition to the mosque “is all about hate and Islamaphobia,” stoked by “neo-conservatives” who “never miss a chance to use hatred toward Muslims to rally support for the ill conceived preventative wars”. . .

Unexploded Car Bomb Found in Manhattan

Yikes.  You know, it's a really good thing that so many would-be terrorists are incompetant. Maybe they went to the Squeaky Fromme school of political activism?

'We Avoided What Could Have Been a Very Deadly Event'

Police found an "amateurish" but potentially powerful bomb that apparently began to detonate but did not explode in a smoking sport utility vehicle in Times Square, authorities said Sunday.

Thousands of tourists were cleared from the streets for 10 hours after two vendors alerted police to the suspicious vehicle, which contained three propane tanks, fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. . .

Frivolity Break: America's Tiniest Apartment?

The Other Half and I live in a 1,500+ sq. ft. house, modest some might say. And I'll be honest, though it is plenty big enough for two people and a portly puddy tat, I do sometimes long for a larger space. But I'll never think of this place as "small" again, after seeing this New Yorker's pad.

My most recent apartment before moving here in 1999 was about 750 square feet. And that was the smallest one I ever had, by far. It was a palace by comparison. Check this out.

Eight Years Ago Today: Remembering 9/11

Today is the day when we look at the calendar, and nearly flinch. September 11, 2001 is distant to us in many ways, but now for the 8th time, we've all looked at that calendar page and have been taken back to where we were that morning.

I'm republishing my personal account of what happened to me that day, written in the early days of my blog. My story is no more special than yours, I know. But on a day when the date is sure to be used by many for political purposes, I wanted to have one post up that just remembers the day.

ORIGINALLY POSTED SEPTEMBER 11, 2007

Photo of United Airlines Las Vegas-based Flight Attendants' memorial service at Sunset Park, September 2001 (Originally published in the Las Vegas Review-Journal)*

Posts I've made today, and earlier in this blog's short history, have discussed or related to 9/11. I'd rather not let the day go by without giving you the reader--and me the blogger--a little more, minus the political rhetoric.

I've become a deeply cynical person, you might say, at least as it regards politics. This is particularly true lately. But on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001 I wasn't thinking about any of that. Everyone who witnessed that day has their own story. Mine is no more relevant than yours, and is surely less traumatic than many.

I awoke that morning at my usual time, somewhere between 6:30 and 6:45 am. I had finished my morning ritual, and was just buttoning up my clothes when the phone rang. It was our friend, Larry, an American Airlines flight attendant, and he was crying. "Two planes have just hit the Trade Center," he managed between sobs. This was startling news, but not yet sufficiently alarming for me to change my routine.

I passed the phone to The Other Half, and turned on the bedroom TV. There it was, and the slight alarm turned to a sinking feeling. This was big. We quickly learned that it was both United's and an American Airlines' planes that hit the buildings, causing high alarm in the room, and on the other end of the phone. The Other Half, and our next-door neighbor/friend, were both United flight attendants. And the neighbor was on a trip at an unknown location. My heart sank, and I nearly sobbed myself--with relief--that my partner was right there in the room with me, accounted for.

Not fully realizing the impact of what had happened, I began my journey to work. I switched on the radio, and was very shortly informed that the Pentagon was on fire. They did not yet know the cause. When I pulled into the parking lot at work, the radio announcer said that a plane was believed to have crashed in Pennsylvania. I said out loud, "the sky is falling." I fully expected at that point that a wave of attacks would continue throughout the morning. Thankfully, that did not come to pass.

Shortly after my arrival at work, The Other Half called, and told me one of the towers had fallen. Not long after, we heard the same about the other. We imagined the worst, that the buildings had fallen over, smashing all below. Thankfully, again, as bad as it was, it could have been worse.
We didn't get much work done that day. Someone went home and got a TV, and we spent much of our time in front of that fuzzy little picture. Later that day, we found that most of our friends, and their colleagues were accounted for. Our neighbor was stranded in New Orleans for over a week. We had quite the celebration upon his return.

The following days were surreal. I'd never seen Las Vegas without planes in the sky, and believe me, you notice. We watched hours upon hours of TV News, of course, like everyone else. And the casinos around town knee-jerk fired lots of people. We feared for our town.

Several days later, The Other Half went to a memorial service at Sunset Park, due east of McCarren Airport, with the Las Vegas United Airlines base crew. During the service, the first plane in days landed, flying right over the park. There was a swelling of spontaneous applause, as you'd imagine.

We were very lucky. We knew people who had friends-of-friends-of-friends who died that day, but fortunately (for our little world), were spared personal losses. One friend was quite well acquainted with one of the pilots, and we had his wife to our house, but that was the extent of our direct contact. United, of course, had a very rocky ride of it, as did American. Many of the flight attendants left town, or left aviation. Las Vegas, predictably bounced back.

UPDATE, SEPTEMBER 11, 2008:

Las Vegas isn't feeling very bouncy this September 11th. Tourism is down, layoffs are widespread, hours (mine included) have been cut at many jobs. United Airlines and American Airlines are seemingly always under threat of going out of business. The neighbor moved to Florida not long after September 11th. The Other Half and I were married this year, and are doing well despite job worries. Whatever happens on November fourth, I think it will bookend 9/11/2001, and hopefully all of this will seem like a bygone era.

UPDATE, SEPTEMBER 11, 2009:

Things in Las Vegas haven't perked up much in the last year. We have, of course, moved from the Bush Era on into the Obama Era. It remains to be seen how that will play out. I'm not a lock-step liberal by any stretch, but I'm willing to give the President time and space.

Jon Stewart Reveals New York's Plan to Oust Limbaugh

Slasher on the Loose in NYC

Image from source, New York Post

This story caught my eye briefly the other day, but I didn't delve into it, not seeing a personal interest in it. I saw more about it today, and only then realized, this guy is still on the loose in New York City. And the ex-housemate just moved there. There you go, it's now personally relevant.
Yikes. First we have the action movie/political thriller prospect of the President shooting down a satellite with a rocket, now we have a real-life horror movie playing out in NYC. Truth is stranger than fiction.
