Chris Christie Takes Israel

Favorite quote from Wonkette comments section: "Whaling Wall?"--Extemporanus
It has been some time now since there were rumblings of a Chris Christie for president movement. And we can't mention Christie and rumblings in the same sentence together (or a host of other words) without stumbling into a discussion of his weight. That's because Christie isn't merely overweight. Hell, I've been overweight. Rick (don't Google me) Santorum is overweight, but nobody noticed until the unflattering swimsuit photo. It isn't because Christie is fat. Newt Gingrich is fat, but it is several steps down the list of negative things about him.

No, Christie is morbidly obese. And I find it peculiar that a person so heavily (there I go again) in the public eye, for so long, hasn't done something about it by now. Surely he has a gym at his disposal. Surely he also has access to nutritionists, personal trainers, lap band surgery. . .I'm just saying, he knows he's really big, he's acknowledged he really needs to lose weight. But these long months after he was prominently thrust into the public consciousness, he's as big--and on display--as ever. So, pardon me if I don't believe any of the Christie for VP rumors.

Or, maybe Christie is counting on a constantly growing America to see him as one of their own? I doubt it. I really don't think that America will vote for an extremely overweight president.

Chris Christie Does Jerusalem: Vacation Pix!

The Good Governor Sandwiches of New Jersey, Chris Christie, is in Israel, on his first official overseas trip as head of an American state. (He’s making up for President Obama, who refuses to visit Israel because he Hates Jews.) How many unionized public school teachers will he yell at on YouTube while there? We await the final tally. Until then, let’s check out some photos from his visit to the Western Wall. . .

Blast from the Past: Snack Cakes!

I'm still trying to stick to the Atkins Diet, but I find myself weak on weekends. I'm pretty good about it throughout the week, then we have some sort of get together, and I throw caution to the wind. I'm still hoping that those Carb Intercept capsules are a little more than a placebo (but if they are a placebo, don't tell me!). One thing that I haven't had much of for a long time are snack cakes. I love them, particularly Little Debbie BIG oatmeal pies. As a kid, I was fortunate to a) have a hyper metabolism and b) have a step dad who worked part time at a grocery store. Dad would bring home truckloads of expiring store-brand snack cakes, mostly of the Hostess-similar varieties. We'd throw them into the big chest freezer, and have an almost endless supply of these goodies. It was rare to get the real Hostess versions, but the commercials made me want 'em!

1. Hostess Cupcakes - This was the catch-all ad for all of Hostess' delicious (but surely bad for you) concoctions. The goodies in this commercial--if uneaten--are probably still as edible as they were in the seventies.

2. Hostess Twinkies - I don't care what anybody said, if you Hostess whittled down their products to ONE brand, it would be Twinkies. And who can forget Twinkie the Kid?

3. Little Debbie Snack Cakes - I never understood the appeal of Rich Little. But Little Debbie has a special place in my heart (and stomach).

4. Dolly Madison Zingers - These things were fantastic. I loved the raspberry coconut ones. (Drooool)

5. Dunkin Donuts Munchkins - You had to go to the donut shop for these, but I loved them. But couldn't they come up with a better spokesperson than apple-headed Mason Reese? Scary.

6. Rice Krispies Treats - These were snack cakes with some assembly required. Well, until they started selling them in the store, because of lazy and/or sarcastic mothers like the one in the commercial.

Okay, go out and get some snack cakes, and get that sugar rush going. It's a brand new week. Happy Monday!

Huckabee Defends First Lady Against Sarah Palin?

Image from Reuters
Politics in this country tends to wallow in the stupid, this is not news. But the far-right outcry that First Lady Michelle Obama is trying to be "the food police" tops the list. Every first lady has her "cause," of course. With Nancy Reagan, it was "Just say no to drugs." With Laura Bush, it was literacy. Mrs. Obama's happens to be fighting obesity in America. What could be wrong with that?

Well, right-wing world doesn't like being told to put down the fries and pick up some cauliflower.  And since anything supported by an Obama must by definition be bad, they've amped up their faux outrage to ridiculous levels. Riding the crest of faux outrage is what Sarah Palin does best, so it is no surprise that she'd take a shot at Mrs. Obama. But since she doesn't have an actual political position to squawk from, she has to do it via her reality show (!) or FaceBook.  Gotta hand it to her, she's got a zinger for everything, and the ability to have every thought--no matter how well formed--make a splash in politics.  But, Palin's possible political future makes her a target, even on her own side.

Mike Huckabee Defends First Lady in Food Fight With Sarah Palin

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee knows a thing or two about obesity. Huckabee, who lost more than 100 pounds after learning in 2003 that hew had diabetes, says fellow Republican Sarah Palin maybe doesn't get it when it comes to First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign against childhood obesity. . .

If you're like me, you had a little too much fun this holiday weekend. It's a time for beer and barbecues, and jumping off your diet feet first.  I ate way too much, and it's back on the wagon starting today.  And it looks like a lot of you need to join me there!

F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2010

Adult obesity rates increased in 28 states in the past year, and declined only in the District of Columbia (D.C.), according to F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2010, a report from the Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). More than two-thirds of states (38) have adult obesity rates above 25 percent. In 1991, no state had an obesity rate above 20 percent.

The report highlights troubling racial, ethnic, regional and income disparities in the nation's obesity epidemic. For instance, adult obesity rates for Blacks and Latinos were higher than for Whites in at least 40 states and the District of Columbia; 10 out of the 11 states with the highest rates of obesity were in the South -- with Mississippi weighing in with highest rates for all adults (33.8 percent) for the sixth year in a row; and 35.3 percent of adults earning less than $15,000 per year were obese compared with 24.5 percent of adults earning $50,000 or more per year. . .

Obesity Epidemic Plateauing?

Hey, finally some good news. We Americans are fat, but we're not getting any fatter! Apparently, they forgot to survey my household. . .

Obesity Epidemic In America Shows Signs of Plateauing

The obesity epidemic that has been spreading for more than a quarter-century in the United States has leveled off among women and may have hit a plateau for men, as well, federal health officials reported yesterday.

While the proportion of adults who are obese remains high at more than 30 percent, the rate in 2005 and 2006 was statistically unchanged from the last time government researchers took a national snapshot two years earlier. . .

Obesity Contagious?

Finally, I'm vindicated! It's not my fault I've put on weight, it's my so-called friends! Pass the phone and some chili-cheese fries, I've got some calls to make. . .
