Mary Travers of Peter, Paul & Mary Dies

Another cultural touchstone, this one for the baby boomer generation, has passed away. Peter, Paul & Mary's music was played a lot when I was growing up, particularly Puff the Magic Dragon. But it was the song I Dig Rock & Roll Music that always did it for me. Sure, it was mean to the major acts of the day, but I got their point. And it was just as catchy as the songs they were deriding! RIP, Mary.

Mary Travers, whose ringing, earnest vocals with the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary made songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “If I Had a Hammer” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” enduring anthems of the 1960s protest movement, died Wednesday night in Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. She was 72 and had lived in Redding, Conn.

The cause was cancer, said her spokeswoman, Heather Lylis. . .
