Texas Bans Last Meal Requests for Death Row Inmates

Even Jesus got a last meal.
Is it my imagination, or does it seem that politicians--Republicans in particular--are just getting meaner and meaner? Seemingly meanness just for the sake of it. Let the sick die! Execute more people! Boo a gay soldier! Everything they've been doing seems to be geared toward sticking it to somebody. The latest news is out of Texas, where prisoners about to be executed will no longer be served the last meal of their choice. Which just sounds pointless and mean to me.

Now, in the story excerpted below, you'll find lists of extravagant meals, and I would agree to putting an end to that silliness. But good grief, how hard is it to put a rule list together? Limit it to a meal, a typical meal you might get at a restaurant. Make it standard portion sizes, limit the number of courses. Easy peasy. But it is more Republican to just shut it down all together. It's like in school where one kid acts up, and the teacher punishes the whole class.

  1. The articles I read said it was a Democrat who requested that a special last meal be eliminated.
And the guy who ordered it, really went overboard and then didn't even eat the darn thing.

  2. Might be, Dan. And my verbiage didn't flow as well as it could have. You have to admit, a lot of politics lately has been mean spirited. Compassionless. And it's mostly from the right. It doesn't mean that a Democrat can't do the same, only that they don't do it as often. And in Texas, I'd imagine being a Democrat is a bit different than in the rest of the country. For instance, Rick Perry used to be one!

  3. I'll agree with you on the tone of politics-it's been pretty bad.
I was wondering if it has something to do with Obama and Reid, mostly, making everything an emergency. Started with the stimulus, Obamacare, mores timulus, jobs, debt ceiling, shut down of government. Everything was an emergency and that ratched up the rhetoric on bitg sides.
If we had leaders who were calm, cool and collected on both sides, maybe we would have calmer conversations.
