CNN Plays Stupid Girls as Intro to Sarah Palin Story

Yeah, you know, I'm really not seeing the problem here. After all, the story was about a picture Sarah and Todd Palin posted, proudly holding bags of Chick-fil-A, and giving the thumbs up. Now, I'm not going to get all pissy with every customer who continues to eat at the restaurant. I mean, I shop at Wal-Mart, even though I feel a little guilty for it. But the Palins are no ordinary people ("common" maybe), and their photo wasn't intended to be friendly or benign. It was a calculated thumb in the eye to gay people, no question about it. Truthfully, it wasn't far from what the Westboro Baptist Church Phelps family does, just a hair's breadth from carrying a sign that says "God Hates F*gs!"

So yeah, I think playing a recording of P!nk's Stupid Girls is appropriate, though maybe Meredith Brooks' Bitch would have been better.

David Letterman Addresses Palin Controversy

I'm glad I watched this clip, because I was worried that David Letterman had caved too quickly over faux outrage. Some fairly tame jokes about Sarah Palin have spawned colossal overreaction by the right-wing blogosphere, and from the Palins themselves.

These folks have a serious problem interpreting comedy. And they are prone to extreme exaggeration. Honestly, if they are this outraged about Letterman's comments, what must they think of Kathy Griffin or Lisa Lampanelli? Good grief. Anyway, the whole affair makes for a fairly entertaining Late Show with David Letterman clip.

Palin Poutrage

It's sort of stunning to see a faux outrage brush fire alight and consume the blogosphere. David Letterman--a comedian, I remind you--cracked a few semi-tasteless jokes about Sarah Palin and her family, and the righties just went apeshit about it. So much so that Letterman actually apologized, which galls me a little.

Some of the "poutrage" was from one of Letterman's "Top 10" lists, where he said that Palin's style choices were that of a "slutty flight attendant." I will grant that "slutty" might not have been the best word, but c'mon. The Top 10 List is always absurd, and there is very little in any of them that is meant to be taken seriously.

But what really sent right-wing world spinning all lopsided were a couple of jokes about one of Palin's daughters getting "knocked up." Now, perhaps you remember that one of her daughters did get knocked up. And you might also remember the rumor that started in Alaska (way before Palin was inexplicably picked to be John McCain's running mate), alleging that Palin's most recent child was actually her daughter's baby. Also, don't forget that Palin drug her whole family onto the stage with her numerous times, and used them as campaign props.

The righties are outraged that Letterman would pick on one of Palin's children, something they say is out of bounds. Unless it's Chelsea Clinton or Amy Carter, I suppose. Anyway, they took Letterman's fairly tame jokes and blew them up into something unrecognizable. They claim that this "62-year-old" man made jokes about the assault, even rape of a 14-year-old girl! Which was clearly not where the joke was going, but is telling about the people who think it is.

It's the type of story that will make a blip on the pop-culture radar, and go away. For most of us. But it will rear its head (like Vladamir Putin in Alaska), and be flogged to death on rightie websites for years. Lame.

Once again, I was too focused on the debate to get much blogging done this evening. And since the issue of "who won" and other feedback on the debate won't be in for a while, I thought I'd catch up a bit on some other issues.

This article, brought to my attention by Stupid Monkey Planet, goes into detail on Sarah Palin (yes, her again) and her husband's connections to some fairly unsavory--some might say un-American--people. All fair game, given the John McCain campaign's slime attack on Barack Obama this week.
