The Daily Show with Jon Stewart's #McConnelling Challenge

One of the sillier, but funniest Daily Show segments aired on Thursday night. I'll post the clip when it's up, but essentially, they just took a promo clip for Sen. Mitch McConnell, and set it to music. The clip is apparently for use in cobbling together Super PAC commercials or something, but it's a bunch of poses and basic "B-roll" footage of everyone's favorite turtle Senator from Kentucky.

The songs chosen had no relevance, other than they were just funny when played behind the video. In addition to running several (and cracking up on camera), Jon Stewart issued a challenge to viewers to make their own videos, and post them at twitter, with the hash tag #McConnelling. Challenge accepted! My song choice is as far from Mitch McConnell as you could imagine, Clarence Carter's ribald Strokin'. Enjoy!

EXCLUSIVE: Rick Perry's First Presidential Application Was Rejected

Many of us have been made familiar with Rick Perry's memory lapses & his oft-repeated gaffes.
But did you know that his first attempt at filing his application for the presidency was rejected!?!?
He was unable to completely fill out the forms... Apparently, he had some trouble remembering a few things.

We've obtained some audio/video footage from a restaurant where Rick Perry & his staff were discussing the rejection notification. Obviously, they are attempting to clean things up before a big mess is made.

It provides a good insight into what Rick Perry is or may be... And may also help to explain some of the strange behavior.

HBO Pulls Nearly All Real Time with Bill Maher Clips

As noted below, I found that minutes after posting the "New Rules" segment of Real Time with Bill Maher--like I almost always do if there is a new episode--HBO pulled the clip for copyright violation. After a little research, I found that the old clips are mostly gone now too. I'm not sure who got a bug up their butt last night at TimeWarner to yank them all, but it seems to have happened.

I have mixed feelings about this. I understand and sympathize with their copyright concerns, and with the fact that Real Time is on a pay service. Sure, it makes sense that they wouldn't want to give it away for free. On the other hand, allowing the clips generates buzz, interests people to what the show is all about, and probably encourages some people to subscribe to HBO so that they can watch it live. HBO might counter that "who would watch it live if they can get it for free on the internet?" Well, Real Time is a live program. Many people want to watch such a program as it airs, especially since it is time-dated material. It has an expiration date. Somehow, NBC and CBS have survived as entities while allowing shared clips of their programs.

I checked out HBO's site, and while they have a limited number of videos there, they can--as far as I can tell--only be linked to, not embedded. Which limits their attractiveness for blogging. So, HBO, you may be in the legal right here, but you also may be losing a significant amount of buzz. MSNBC has not pulled links to their programming from YouTube, most likely because of that sort of buzz.

This brilliant piece of editing is awe inspiring. That crazy, nutbag Glenn Beck famously went even crazier the other day, and didn't have the sense to be embarrassed about it. Since then, several other radio and TV hosts have had fun with it. But not until now, with "Get Off My Phone" Radio Freak Out (TWILIGHT VAMPIRE METAL REMIX) has it been used to its fullest potential. Enjoy.

How is it that I spend so much time online, and yet the "Play them off, Keyboard Cat!" thing totally missed me? I've seen the cat before, but didn't realize he was the Fail! punctuation on videos of human calamity and foolishness. It's cute. And hey, any excuse for funny cats on the blog. . .

The National Organization for Marriage's "Gathering Storm" ad has provided tons of opportunities for parody by YouTubers and others. The hilarity of the ad outweighed its mean-spiritedness and lies. Blast from the Past: Commercial Characters

Back in the 70s, it seemed that every major product had a spokesperson. A fictional spokesperson, who was oddly fixated on their product. They sang the praises of whatever product they were hawking, and appeared in commercials for years. And as memorable as they are, these would be very strange people in real life.




1. Madge, Palmolive Dishwashing Liquid - Take Madge, for example. She was always plopping clients' hands into dish soap, as though that was the most normal thing in the world for a manicurist to do.

2. Sarah Tucker, Cool Whip - I don't know if Sarah Tucker was real or a fictional character, but the woman in the commercials could not be the person she was in real life. I remember a commercial where she was carrying Cool Whip in her purse.

3. Cora, Maxwell House Coffee - Played by the "Wicked Witch of the West," Margaret Hamilton, Cora was a manic, slightly scary saleslady who liked Maxwell House. A lot. Perhaps decaf is in order, Cora?

4. Rosie, Bounty Paper Towels - Nancy Walker's Rosie was a sarcastic waitress, who loved to suspend coffee cups and other things on wet paper towels. But they're still using her "It's the quicker picker upper!" phrase.
