Cindy McCain showed up wearing $300,000 worth of clothes and jewelry to the Republican National Convention. John McCain has spent thousands on stage makeup to make him look. . .younger? Alive? And now, it's become known that Sarah Palin has spent at least $150,000 on clothing (presumably from campaign contributions) for herself and her family for the campaign.
"So what?" you might say. . .if you're a McCain-Palin supporter. But I seem to remember a very big stink being raised about John Edwards' $400 haircuts. "How could it be," the song went, "that a candidate fighting for the little guy" could spend so much on puffery? How indeed. The Edwards attack went on for longer, and was obsessed over more than his affair for God's sake.
The McCain-Palin campaign's theme of the week is "Joe the Plumber," a phrase that has been repeated enough to cause nausea. Several other cutesy names have been bestowed upon other supporters. Palin called herself a "Joe Six Pack." To quote Seth Myers and Amy Poehler, REALLY? Does a "Joe Six Pack" really need $150,000 worth of clothes from stores like Neimen Marcus? REALLY?
