Nevada: Paper Endorses McCain; Dems Early Voting Lead
These are two stories from my backyard, possibly missed by local Nevadans and Las Vegans due to the recovery of a kidnapped little boy, Cole Puffinburger, which has overrun local news. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy the little boy was found, and that he was apparently unharmed. But the story is a little outside this blog's focus.
I was surprised (just a little) to see that the Las Vegas Review Journal has endorsed John McCain. It is known as a right-leaning paper, of course. I've just had a hard time imagining how I might write a position paper in favor of John McCain. There's just very little to hang your hat on if you're not already a staunch Republican. But, endorse him they did.
But it may not have any influence here in the valley if early voting returns are any indicator. Early voting opened yesterday, and the results were a little surprising. Not only did more people vote on opening day than ever before, but a significant majority of those voters were Democrats. This is an election that Democrats can win, simply by showing up. So I'm relieved to say--at least at this early stage--we are.
