One of the most annoying things about mainstream news and conventional wisdom, is the idea that no matter what, in a right vs. left conflict, each side is as bad as the other. It isn't always true, but it's almost always sold that way. In this situation--cases of one party setting up some "planted" third party candidates to derail the other party--it's kind of true. Both Democrats and Republicans, in different states, tried to stack the deck.
The twist is, the Democrats failed, and then the masterminds behind the plot were fired or quit. The Republicans succeeded, and then took their new notoriety and ran with it! So, in this case, the old trope was true, there are skunks on both sides. But only one side was proud of its scent.
