Rachel Maddow Blasts GOP Excuses for DADT Vote to Pieces

The attached video clip is fairly long. But if you want to see the difference between a typical cable news commentary show and The Rachel Maddow Show, you couldn't do much better than this clip.  While the entire Tuesday night program was full of information and refutations of misinformation (much of it on the Don't Ask, Don't Tell/defense bill vote), this clip contains a complete knock down of the official GOP reasons for filibustering the defense bill.  She's not shouting, she doesn't have four or five windows with arguing talking heads.  She just lays it out, and proves her point with quotes and video.  Love her, seriously.

  1. Complain all you want, but you have to admit that Reid blew it big time. Why did he bring it up now? Why not earlier, like last year, before Obama's stock was a lot higher and Obama could lobby for the law? (btw, I have no problems if DADT is repealed)
Why did Reid bring it up without the votes? Did he even bother to ask Snowe, Lincoln and Pryor about their votes?
Further, why did he try and attach it to the military spending bill? It was a cheap political trick. This bill probably could have passed on it's own, except for Reid's bumbling idiocy.

  2. Dan, it was no more a cheap political trick than it was when Republicans attached other non-related things to earlier defense bills. I seem to remember when Democrats were against this or that amendment Repbulicans saying "why do you hate the troops," or something to that effect.

Did you watch the video? Rachel ran a list of earlier "non military" amendments attached by Republicans. Also, it is explained that there seemed to be a "deal" of some sort for the votes, and SOMEBODY welched.

Also, it's important to remember that Don't Ask, Don't tell was PASSED on a defense bill, and that Republicans were part of a coalition that tried to attach the Dream bill do another one.

I don't know if I'd pin this on Reid. I'd pin it on the two Dems who defected, and a few of the Republicans who gave nonsensical reasons for filibustering. Oh, and John McCain who is two steps from wondering where he is. He was clueless that the military HAS actively sought out evidence on gay soldiers who were keeping their half of the "don't ask, don't tell" bargain.
